Working in Austria as a student

Gaining work experience while studying is important and useful for your future career. In Vienna, there are multiple opportunities for students who want to work alongside their studies. It is important to note that the amount of hours you are allowed to work as a student in Austria differs depending on your residence permit.

  • Students from a third country (i.e. not from EU, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway or Switzerland): in addition to your valid residence permit for students (Aufenthaltstitel Student)you will need a work permit to work in Austria. Please note that during the semester you are only allowed to work for a maximum of 20 hours a week (Teilzeit). You can find more information regarding the work permit here. During the summer months you can work up to 40 hrs/week, provided that your job is related to your field of study. If you have specific questions about working in Austria or if you wish to work full time in summer, please contact the International Students Welcome & Support team.

  • Students from EU, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway or Switzerland: you are allowed to work in Austria and do not require a work permit.

While Vienna is an international city and (almost) everyone speaks English, a solid knowledge of German is still very important for the job market. If you wish to work during your studies, or even start your career in Austria once you have graduated, it is important that you try to reach a B2 level in German, as this is a deciding factor for many employers.
