Betriebsrat für das wissenschaftliche Personal

What is the Betriebsrat?

The Betriebsrat is the WU staff council, which is split into one council that represents the academic faculty (

Betriebsrat für das wissenschaftliche Personal

), and another that represents the administrative staff (Betriebsrat für das allgemeine Personal). It is a statutory body. This is the English edition of the newsletter for the academic staff council, which promotes the scientific, health, and legal interests of some 1,400 WU employees.

While collective bargaining agreements on wages and basic issues on employment are negotiated between the Austrian Council of Universities (Österreichische Universitätenkonferenz) and the Union of Civil Servants (Gewerkschaft Öffentlicher Dienst), the Betriebsrat negotiates operational agreements (Betriebsvereinbarungen) on issues like bonuses or data storage with the Rector’s Council (Rektorat) at WU. In doing so, we always aim to achieve the best possible outcome. We also provide individual advice on legal issues. The Betriebsrat has the right to represent academic staff who face dismissal and, should it be necessary, to challenge lay-offs in general.

For any issues from workplace harassment to concerns about workplace health and safety, the WU Betriebsrat is an important point of contact for conflict resolution between staff and university management.
