The WU Institute for Gender and Diversity in Organizations is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Topic: WU Stands Against Gender-Based Violence
Time: Dec 9, 2020 10:00 AM Vienna

What is the event about?

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a global, multifaceted, and complex phenomenon. The aim of the event organized by the WU Institute for Gender and Diversity in Organizations is to promote the discussion of different, less discussed and sometimes less visible forms of GBV. The expert online panel includes scholars, NGO and State representatives whose field of research and action are in the areas of online violence against women and girls, forced marriages, police sexual misconduct, harmful traditional practices, domestic violence, and human trafficking.

We would like to create opportunities for dialogue between our experts, students, and other members of civil society. The event has been organized in the framework of the United Nations campaign Orange the World.

Elisabeth Kelan (University of Essex): Positions of Power – Men as Middle Managers Supporting and Resisting Gender Equality in Organisations
on Tuesday, May 26th, 2020 from 4:30 –6:00 pm, virtual via MS Teams.

The lecture is part of our Department Research Seminar series.

Abstract. Men are increasingly called upon to act as change agents for gender equality. This article explores how men as middle managers can use their positional power to include women. Drawing on job shadowing and discourse analysis, the article highlights four areas in which men can include women. Men’s attempts to include women through bonding can fail because men draw on sexualised notions to describe women. Men are able to include women by engaging in practices that disrupt the homogenous reproduction in organisations. If men engage in gender equality efforts, they are often met by simultaneous ridicule and praise. Men also often enjoy career benefits from engaging in gender equality efforts. The article suggests that without recognising their own power and privilege, it is difficult for men to challenge existing gender relations rather than reproducing them. The article contributes an understanding to scholarship and practice around the complexities in analysing and conceptualising how men engage in gender equality.

Speaker. Elisabeth Kelan, PhD, is a Professor of Leadership and Organisation, and Head of the Organisation Studies and Human Resource Management Group at Essex Business School, University of Essex.
