Call for papers

The interactions and tensions between organizational and individual identities got much attention within organizational studies and analysis during the last decade. In this stream we would like to focus especially on issues of diversity and gender with respect to organizational and individual identity formation.

Identity formation has been a crucial point in social sciences since many years. Above all it's in- and exclusive effects and functions have been widely discussed (see e.g. Goffman 1959, Butler 1990). Since organizations are important places of socialization processes and therefore the re-productions of social power relations, we want to put the focus on the social construction of normative and marginalized identities in organizations by mechanisms of doing gender and doing difference. Both - heterogeneous and homogeneous - identity formations are produced on the symbolic/linguistic, interactive and structural level and last but not least on the level of self-representation. Although Gender and Diversity Management has become an important issue during the last decades within different organizational contexts and diversity and heterogeneity of identities have been celebrated, organizational pressures towards homogeneity and uniformity are evident. Therefore we encourage conceptional or empirical papers that draw on the following areas:

  • Modes and politics of symbolic practices in constructing the self within organizational frameworks

  • Conflicts and/or synergy effects between diverse identities formations within organizations

  • The role of heterogeneity/homogeneity/uniformity in concepts of corporate identity and organizational design

  • Subversive strategies in organizations concerning the construction of diverse identities

  • Analysis of organizational processes and structures which support the construction of heterogeneity/homogeneity/uniformity in organizations

  • Conflict handling of individuals within homogeneity in organizations

  • The role of identity formation in Gender- and Diversity Management

Stream format

We are interested in an interactive discussion in this sub-theme. Presenters will have a maximum of 20 minutes to present the key points of their paper and to pose 2-3 questions for subsequent discussion. In order to ensure that this process is successful, the final papers are expected by the due date so that the other participants could read the papers in advance of the conference.
