Workshop 4: Leadership in Academia

The seminar’s goal is to introduce participants to the basics of leadership and teamwork. The researchers will learn about classic leadership concepts , team role models and modern management tools s for the scientific field.

The workshop explicitly addresses the characteristics of the working environment at universities, such as frequently changing teams, dependencies, and multicultural collaboration. It also focuses on difficult issues within a team, and adopting a solution-oriented approach is  an essential part of the concept as well .

Goals
  • Reflecting on your very own leadership style

  • Expectation management: dealing with various expectations inside and outside of your own scientific team

  • Leadership requirements in academia

  •  Management tools for scientists

  • Understanding team dynamics: “How to build up a high-performing team?”

  • Preparation for (future) leadership tasks

Contents

Reflection:

  • Status quo:  Your own leadership style and your preferred team roles

  • Expectation management: responsibilities and relationships at your workplace

  • Development of an individual leadership concept

Management & Leadership:

  • Basic elements of effective team management

  • Tasks, roles and challenges – Key issues of successful leadership

  • Creating a ‘climate of inspiration’ (transformational approach)

  • Lateral leadership and team-building processes

Communication:

  • Addressing difficult issues

  • Conducting solution-oriented discussions

  • How to handle conflicts

The seminar takes a process-oriented approach. Following a preliminary survey (approx. 2 weeks before the seminar) the workshop is adjusted in line with requirements.

Prof. Dr. Uta Bronner

Prof. Dr. Uta Bronner works as a professor at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences in the Department of Business Psychology. Previously, she gained more than ten years of practical experience in industry, where she worked as a human resources expert and manager. Most recently, she was the head of personnel and organizational development at a subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH, Stuttgart. As co-founder of impulsplus (www.impulsplus.com), Uta Bronner has more than 20 years of training and coaching experience. She is a certified coach, consultant and change agent. Her focus is on leadership and career planning in science.
