Workshop 3

Communication and self-presentation in science

A starting career in science is often associated with uncertainties: Do I have what it takes? Am I good enough? Can I do everything I should be able to do?

The answers to these questions can only be partially objective. We can only confidently control our own impact and persuasiveness in scientific communication if we also take our emotional state and inner attitude into account.

This workshop is about finding the balance between professional competence, authentic self-presentation, and clear communication. You will learn how to highlight your strengths, convey your messages convincingly, and appear confident and effective even in challenging situations—such as lectures, Q&A sessions, or panel discussions.

At the same time, you will experience the connection between inner attitude, body language, and linguistic expressiveness: How does my self-image influence my impact on others? What role does status communication play in a scientific context? And how can I shape my presence in a targeted manner without losing authenticity?

Through practical exercises, feedback, and reflection, you will develop a keener sense of your communicative impact and gain more confidence in presenting yourself and your research. This will enable you to present yourself in a confident, authentic, and self-assured manner—even under pressure.
