Start Your Own Student Club
Got an idea for a Student Club of your own? Here’s how to launch your club at WU – from the first steps to official recognition.
What kind of club can I start?
You can start a club on almost any topic. Just make sure your club’s purpose aligns with WU’s values, complies with legal standards, does not discriminate, and does not promote extremist or political party agendas.
How many members do I need to start a club?
To start a Student Club, you need at least two WU students.
Does our club need a specific legal structure?
No specific legal form is required. Both informal initiatives and registered associations are welcome to become part of WU’s club community.
How does my club become officially recognized?
To get recognized, fill out the Student Club Info form, sign the Code of Conduct, and send everything to studentclubs@wu.ac.at. We’ll review your application and get in touch if we have any questions. Once everything checks out, your club will officially become part of WU’s club community.
If you’re planning to start a “program club” – a club closely tied to your degree program or specialization – you’ll also need approval from the responsible academic lead (Program Director or Specialization Coordinator).
What are the benefits of official recognition?
Once recognized, your club can be featured on the WU website, take part in the annual Student Club Conference, present at the Student Club Fair, book seminar rooms, use the Club Space in the SC, and much more.
What is an "accredited" club - and what are the benefits?
If your club meets certain additional criteria, it can become accredited at WU – unlocking even more benefits! These include: using “WU” in your club’s name, displaying the “supported by WU” logo, applying for financial support.
What are the requirements of accreditation?
To become accredited, your club must meet the following requirements:
Legal Structure: Your club must be a registered association, and you’ll need to submit your bylaws.
Self-Disclosure: You must complete a self-disclosure form, including information about your club’s funding sources.
Activities: Your club must host at least one event per academic year that is open to all WU students and not just members.
WU in the Name: If you want to include “WU” in your club’s name, you’ll need to sign a licensing agreement with WU.
Accountability Report: If your club receives funding from WU, you must submit a report detailing how the funds were used by a set deadline.
Important: If you miss the deadline, your club will lose its accreditation.
