Skilled Migrants in Austria: Needed but Unwelcome?

Ort: Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien LC.0.004, Galerie am 10. April 2019 Startet um 18:00 Endet um 19:30

Join us in a conversation about challenges and opportunities skilled migrants face in Austria. The panel will include experts from academia, industry, public sector, and highly qualified migrants.

In 2011, Austrian government passed the regulatory reform on skilled immigration to meet the economic demand for a highly qualified workforce in the country’s labor market. However, as of today, the influx of skilled migrants has not met these expectations: for example, the numbers of annual applications for the Red-White-Red card (work permit for citizens of non-EU countries) are smaller than expected. This raises a number of questions. Do the Austrian government and the private sector effectively support skilled migrants in the labor market entry process? Are companies ready to provide skilled migrants with attractive job offers, fair remuneration, and development opportunities? Are there enough resources for mutually enriching social integration? And what are the effects of the recent anti-immigration backlash on skilled migrant individuals?
