Thema: INTERDEPENDENCE WITHIN AND ACROSS MARKET POSITIONS

Abstract (short):
A central assumption in the theory of market positions is the immutability of market positions. Such immutability guarantees that imitation does not erode attractiveness of the position. While theoretically elegant, there is little empirical work that examines this core assumption that firms within market positions are more interdependent than firms across market positions. This paper develops and reports an empirical methodology that addresses this question. We use the entry of Southwest Airlines into two endpoints of a route without actually flying the route as an exogenous event reflecting imminent threat of entry into the route. We then compare the responses of firms in the same position as Southwest to the responses of firms in a different position than Southwest. This allows us to infer the extent of interdependence within and across market positions following the threat of entry.
