Virtual PC rooms
A total of 200 virtual PC rooms have been available at WU since the 2021/22 academic year. These are equipped with the same special software as the PCs in the PC rooms on campus. Students and faculty can access the virtual PCs remotely, e.g. from home.
NOTE!
Please note that you need a VPN connection to access a virtual PC from outside WU. For information on the VPN application, please visit the following website: https://www.wu.ac.at/it/services/network/vpn
What can the virtual PCs be used for?
The virtual PCs can be used for courses that usually take place in a PC room but are held in synchronous hybrid or online mode. A total of 123 virtual PCs are available for this usage scenario, which are assigned to three virtual PC rooms:
Virtual PC Room S with 31 seats.
Virtual PC room M with 41 seats
Virtual PC room L with 51 seats
Teachers book a virtual PC room via Rooms. Students and lecturers can then access the virtual PCs during regular course dates. The access authorization is automatically assigned for teachers and for students registered for this course.
The remaining 77 virtual PCs are assigned to the virtual exercise room and are available to students at WU at any time for practicing. The PCs of the three virtual PC rooms mentioned above are also accessible to all students every day after the last course. The allocation of the virtual PCs for practice purposes is done according to the first-come-first-served principle.
How can I access the virtual PCs?
There are three ways you can access a virtual PC.
Access via Horizon Client for instructors using a WU PC.
Install the Horizon Client via the Software Center (available to all WU employees).
After installation, you can access Horizon Client from the Start menu. By default, the server "labconnect.wu.ac.at" is already entered.
After double-clicking on "labconnect.wu.ac.at", log in with your WU e-mail address (vorname.nachname@wu.ac.at) or your WU user name and WU account password.
After logging in, you will be shown the virtual PC rooms (pools) for which you are authorized to access at the time.
After double-clicking on the corresponding virtual PC room, you will be forwarded to a free PC in the respective pool and automatically logged in.
Access via Horizon Client for faculty and students using private device.
Go to the following website: https://labconnect.wu.ac.at.
Click "Install VMware Horizon Client" to download Horizon Client for the appropriate operating system.
Then launch the Horizon Client. At startup, no server is preset yet. Add it by clicking the "Add Server" button and entering the following address: https://labconnect.wu.ac.at.
Instructors log in with their WU email address. If this does not work, then log in with your WU username with the prefix "ad-wu-wien\". For example: ad-wu-wien/mmusterm. Students log in with their WU e-mail address (hMatrikelnummer@s.wu.ac.at).
After double-clicking on the corresponding PC room, you will be redirected to a free virtual PC in the respective pool and logged in automatically.
Access via the Horizon website
Access the following web page: https://labconnect.wu.ac.at.
Click on "VMware Horizon HTML Access."
Instructors log in with their WU email address. If this does not work, then log in with your WU username with the prefix "ad-wu-wien\". For example: ad-wu-wien/mmusterm. Students log in with their WU email address (hMatrikelnummer@s.wu.ac.at).
Select the respective virtual PC room to be redirected to a free virtual PC and automatically logged in.
How can I connect a USB stick to the virtual PC?
You can connect a USB stick to your PC and access it through the virtual PCs if you have Horizon Client installed. Adding the USB stick does not work via the web access.
To do this, connect your USB stick to your PC.
When the USB stick is recognized by your operating system, click Connect USB Device. Here you will see all available USB sticks.
Select your USB stick.
Your USB stick is connected to the virtual PC and you can access it on the virtual PC as usual via File Explorer.
NOTE!
Do not forget to eject your USB stick before you disconnect it from your PC.
How can I start Microsoft Teams or Zoom in the virtual PC room?
If you are planning an online session in the virtual PC room and want to use Microsoft Teams or Zoom as the web conferencing tool for it, please proceed as follows:
Start the online meeting in Microsoft Teams or Zoom and set up everything for it (microphone, camera, screen sharing, etc.).
Now open Horizon Client and access the virtual PC (see "How can I access the virtual PCs?").
If you want to broadcast a presentation, you must first share your entire screen in Microsoft Teams or Zoom. Then you can open the presentation on the virtual PC.
You can minimize or shrink the virtual PC application window at any time so that you can access your local PC and the virtual PC simultaneously.
NOTE!
On the virtual PC, you can log in to Microsoft Teams or Zoom via the web browser, but this does not allow you to use the webcam. We therefore recommend that you always start Microsoft Teams or Zoom via the client on the local PC.
