Nostrification

Nostrification is permitted only if an Austrian law or regulation explicitly requires an Austrian academic degree for the exercise of a specific profession.

Access to professions requiring a university degree for nationals of EU or EEA member states is regulated by separate directives and does not require nostrification. Likewise, nostrification is not required – and as a result not acceptable – if the degree is to be used solely for admission to an Austrian bachelor’s master’s program, a doctoral program or PhD program.

At the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien), an application for nostrification can only be processed if the foreign degree is substantively equivalent to a degree program offered at WU Vienna. The same application for nostrification may not be submitted to more than one university simultaneously, nor may it be resubmitted to another university or university college of teacher education after its withdrawal.

At the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien), nostrification may be considered for the following degree programm:

  • Bachelorstudium Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften

  • Bachelorstudium Wirtschaftsrecht

  • Masterstudium in Wirtschaftspädagogik

  • Masterstudium in Steuern und Rechnungslegung

Before submitting an application, applicants are advised to obtain general information in advance. General information on the recognition of higher education qualifications is provided by ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA, the official contact point for cross‑border academic recognition matters. ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA also issues evaluations of foreign higher education qualifications for professional purposes. Further information is available on the website: ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA.

Procedure

Please note that the nostrification process may take several semesters and is never approved without conditions (such as the completion of additional examinations).

During the procedure, the foreign degree program is compared with a corresponding degree program at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien). A prerequisite for nostrification is predominant equivalence. If the differences are considered substantial, nostrification is not possible.

If fundamental equivalence exists but certain subject areas are missing, conditions will be imposed. This requires the completion of specified courses at WU Wien and the successful passing of the corresponding examinations. Depending on the scope of these requirements, fulfilling them may take several semesters.

The Austrian academic degree is awarded only after all conditions have been fully met.
