Proof of Language Proficiency

German Skills for Bachelor´s Programs

To apply for a German-taught bachelor's program at WU, you must submit at least one of the following certificates (not older than 2 years):

  • Österreichisches Sprachdiplom - ÖSD Zertifikat A2

  • Goethe Institut - Goethe Zertifikat A2

  • telc Deutsch A2

  • Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz DSD I A2

  • Österreichischer Integrationsfonds (ÖIF) - ÖIF Test A2

For admission to a German-taught bachelor's program at WU, you must present one of the following certificates at the latest at the time of your personal admission to the regular degree program:

  • Diplomas (valid indefinitely):

    • Secondary school-leaving certificate obtained in a school with German as language of instruction or at an Austrian or German school abroad

    • Completion of a German-taught degree program with a duration of at least 3 years at a recognized postsecondary educational institution (university, university of applied sciences)

  • Supplementary examination in German from the Vienna University Preparation Program (VWU) (valid indefinitely)

  • German certificates (valid for three years after the exam):

    • C1 from the Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) (exams at WU)

    • Goethe Zertifikat C1 from the Goethe Institute

    • telc Deutsch “C1 Hochschule”

    • DSH2 (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer StudienbewerberInnen) (C1)

    • Deutsches Sprachdiplom - Zweite Stufe (DSD II) from the German Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (C1)

    • Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Test DaF), at least level TDN 4 in all subtests (C1)

University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities

German courses as part of the Vienna University Preparation Program (VWU) are available exclusively for students planning to enroll in the Bachelor’s Programs in Business Law or Business, Economics and Social Sciences. In order to attend the VWU, you need an admission letter or an admission notice. You can attend the German course for up to 4 semesters.

If you attend German courses at the VWU, only the successfully completed "Ergänzungsprüfung Deutsch" at the VWU can be accepted as proof for your admission to the degree programs.

German Skills for Master´s and Doctoral Programs

For admission to a German-taught master's/doctoral program at WU, you must present one of the following proofs:

  • Diplomas (valid indefinitely):

    • Secondary school-leaving certificate obtained in a school with German as language of instruction or at an Austrian or German school abroad

    • Completion of a German-taught degree program with a duration of at least 3 years at a recognized postsecondary educational institution (university, university of applied sciences)

  • Supplementary examination in German from the Vienna University Preparation Program (VWU) (valid indefinitely)

  • German certificates (valid for three years after the exam):

    • C1 from the Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) (exams at WU)

Please note that WU does not offer a German language course as part of the Vienna University Preparation Program (Vienna University Preparation Program) for future master's and doctoral students.

 

Doctoral Programs
In exceptional cases, your dissertation supervisor may also allow you to complete the course in English:

English Skills for Bachelor´s Program

No knowledge of German is required for admission to the English-taught Bachelor's Program in Business and Economics.
You must present one of the following English certificates at the latest upon personal admission to the regular degree program:

  • A passing grade in English on a secondary school leaving certificate issued by a school in the EU, the EEA, or Switzerland

  • TOEFL 85/TOEFL IBT Home Edition 85 (official or unofficial test report) (B2)

  • IELTS 6.0 [academic version] (official or unofficial test report) (B2)

  • Cambridge English: First (FCE-B2), CAE (Certificate in Advanced English-B2), CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English-B2), BEC Higher (Business English Certificate Higher-B2), BEC Vantage (Business English Certificate Vantage-B2)

  • Oxford Test of English (at least 111 points-B2): This exam is offered p.e. by WU Business Language Center

  • A certificate from an Austrian university language center confirming the applicant has achieved language skills level B2

  • Documentation proving that English is your first language.

English Skills for Master´s Programs

To apply to an English-taught master's program at WU, you must upload one of the certificates listed below with your online application.
German language skills are not required.

Please note that special language requirements are set for International Management/CEMS.

The following (valid) proofs of sufficient English language skills are accepted:

  • TOEFL 100 / TOEFL IBT Home Edition 100 (official or unofficial test report) (C1)

  • IELTS 7.0 [academic version] (official or unofficial test report) (C1)

  • Cambridge English: CAE (Certificate in Advanced English), CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English), BEC Higher (Business English Certificate Higher) (C1)

  • UNIcert III(C1)

  • A full English-taught bachelor’s program (at least 3 years) or master’s program (at least 2 years); a confirmation from the university is required to prove that the completed program was taught in English. Please note that only an exchange semester or year in an English speaking country or with courses taught in English is not sufficient. To be considered official the document has to be stamped and signed by your university.

  • English as first language

  • C1-level certificate issued by a university language center, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
    The certificate has to prove that you took one or more tests to assess your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. These skills should correspond to level C1 or higher according to the CEFR.
    Course transcripts or confirmations about your overall language skills (e.g. DAAD-Certificates) or certain language courses will NOT be accepted as proof of your language skills. If you are not sure whether your language certificate fulfils these criteria, please submit one of the standardized tests mentioned above.
