Welcome to WU

We’re pleased to welcome you to WU!

We’ve put together this Welcome Folder with some important information for you, to help you get off to the best possible start at our university. It will help you learn about your new job and give you an overview of WU’s organizational structure and history.

This brochure introduces you to WU’s administrative units and the services they provide.

Here you can find an overview of the various funding opportunities available to you as a WU employee.

For Teaching and Research Assistants (Support Tutors/Bachelor and Master Student Guides): Please see our information sheet for these positions.

Entry and Residence

For Third Country Nationals:

Third Country Nationals will need a visa or residence permit for entry to and employment in Austria.

Student positions:

Teaching and Research Assistants/Tutors who are employed to perform research and teaching duties at a university, do not need a work permit – a valid residence permit “student” is sufficient for an employment up to 20 hours/week.

The personnel office can issue an employment confirmation, if required for the extension of your residence permit.

Researcher positions:

  • Visa D-Erwerb is valid for 180 days and allows you to take up employment immediately - you can apply for this type of Visa at the Austrian representative authority.
When moved to Vienna you would have to apply for the residence permit “Researcher” at MA 35 in time before the Visa expires.

  • Residence permit „Researcher“ is granted for 2 years with the possibility to renew it after this period. With a residence permit from another EU country you could directly apply for a “Researcher” at MA 35 in Vienna or alternatively at the Austrian representative authority in your current place of residence abroad. Please keep in mind - this process can take up to 2-3 months.

We recommend contacting the Austrian representative authority and check the best option for you. Kindly note that visa procedures can be complicated and lengthy and WU does not have any influence on the authorities. It is therefore strongly recommended to start the procedures in due time and to have all documents properly prepared at the time of application.

The Business Immigration Office supports international professionals by providing consultations on residence and employment law for foreign nationals and also provide assistance for the application process.

Further information on entry and residence for students and researchers you will find at OEAD.

Residence registration

Residents in Austria are required to register their place of residence with the authorities within three days before or after moving to a new address.

EU and EEA citizens and citizens from Switzerland are free to enter and settle in Austria without a permit. However, a confirmation of registration (Anmeldebescheinigung) is required if you reside in Austria for more than 3 months.

Useful information for your stay (registration, accommodation, life in Vienna etc.) is available on the website of our welcome services .

We hope you get off to a successful start and enjoy your new job at our university!
