New Professor for Labor and Social Law: Franz Marhold

Franz Marhold is WU's new Professor for Labor and Social Law. He started at WU's Department of Business, Employment and Social Security Law on September 1st. Professor Marhold intends to focus on European social law and Austrian and European works constitution law.

In 1988 he was named Associate Professor at his alma mater, and in 1990, he became a full Professor for Civil Law and Related Areas at the University of Konstanz, Germany. In Konstanz, he served as Dean for two periods, and as Vice-Rector for one period. In 1996, he switched to the University of Graz as Professor for Labor and Social Law, where he also served as Dean of Studies for two periods. Franz Marhold was admitted to the German Bar Association in 1998 and to the Austrian Bar Association in 2008.

Research focus at WU

At WU, Franz Marhold plans to focus mainly on Austrian and European works constitution law, particularly on the role of social dialog in times of crisis. Marhold also conducts comprehensive research in the fields of European social and business law, as well as traditional Austrian labor law. He is also an expert in issues related to cross-border medication trafficking, medical tourism, internet pharmacies and other questions related to the international supplying of medical goods.

Working at WU: Building up research and teaching networks

"My main motivation in coming to WU is the opportunity to work with the excellent researchers here at the Department of Business, Employment and Social Security Law. I am also very interested in cooperating with the economic sciences, especially in the fields of social policy and social security", says Marhold on his new professorship at WU. A further challenge he is looking forward to is his teaching: "Here in Vienna there is real competition in legal education, which is a new situation. I am committed to doing my best to contribute to WU's success in the business education sector," says Marhold enthusiastically.
