The WU Vienna University of Economics and Business is launching its first-ever “Journalist in Residence” program.

The WU Vienna University of Economics and Business is launching its first-ever “Journalist in Residence” program. Funded by the WU Foundation, the program is aimed at journalists and content creators and offers them the opportunity to carry out independent projects at the intersection of academia and the public sphere. During a “residency” lasting two to six months, participants carry out their project(s) in an academic setting and deepen their exchange with researchers.

Applications are accepted through September 14, 2026.

The Program—in Collaboration with WU

As a Journalist in Residence, you’ll have the opportunity to work directly on the Campus WU. You will carry out one or more projects. In doing so, you will have access to the WU library, your own workspace, and the opportunity to network with researchers.

You will actively contribute your expertise, for example through events, workshops, moderated sessions, panel discussions, or other contributions within WU’s academic and public spheres. The exact nature of these activities will be determined on an individual basis and will depend on your professional focus and skills.

Who Can Apply?

Journalists and content creators with verifiable professional experience who research and publish fact-based content on economic, social, and scientific topics are eligible to apply. You conduct in-depth research on complex topics, present them in an accessible manner, and meet journalistic quality standards.

Journalistic Independence

You are responsible for selecting topics and conducting research. WU supports the projects by providing access to academic expertise and infrastructure but does not influence the journalistic work.

Application

You apply with one or more specific projects and can choose the duration of your stay between two and six months. You will receive a fee for your work, which depends on the specific activities performed (depending on the project and your experience, 9,000 euros for a three-month stay).

To apply, you must submit a brief resume, a portfolio demonstrating your quality of work and fact-based approach, a letter of motivation (max. 1 page), and a brief project outline for the project(s) (max. 2 pages). The project outline should explain the scope of the project, its objectives, and its relevance to WU’s areas of focus.

Applications and questions should be submitted by September 14, 2026 to journalistinresidence@wu.ac.at.
