Student Rankings & GPA
The Student Rankings and the Grade Point Average (GPA) help you to transparently present your performance in your bachelor's or master's program and compare it with that of your peers. This voluntary service provided by WU supports you with applications - be it for further studies, internships, or jobs.

Cutoff dates & publication
The evaluation takes place on six fixed cutoff dates per academic year and is published one month later in the online services for students @MYWU !
cutoff dates | publication* |
February 15 | March 15 |
April 15 | May 15 |
May 15 | June 15 |
July 15 | August 15 |
October 15 | November 15 |
Dezember 15 | January 15 |
*If the publication date falls on a public holiday or weekend, the ranking will be published on the next working day.
Grade ranking (GPA)
The GPA is calculated by multiplying your grade by the respective ECTS credits and then dividing it by the total number of ECTS credits in the respective degree program.
Formula:
(grade × ECTS) / total ECTS
Example: A student has completed the following achievements in the Bachelor's Program in Business Law:
Course | ECTS | Grade | Weighted grade (grade × ECTS) |
Introduction to BW | 3 | 2 | 6 |
Mathematics | 4 | 3 | 12 |
European and Public Commercial Law I | 4 | 4 | 16 |
Fundamentals of economics I | 4 | 1 | 4 |
AMC I | 6 | 2 | 12 |
AMC II | 6 | 2 | 12 |
Marketing | 4 | 2 | 8 |
Financing | 4 | 3 | 12 |
Fundamentals of economics II | 4 | 1 | 4 |
Private Commercial Law I | 4 | 2 | 8 |
Business Communication I | 4 | 3 | 12 |
Total | 47 | 106 |
Student A has therefore achieved 47 ECTS and a sum of weighted grades of 106. The GPA results in: 106 ÷ 47 = 2.26
(The lower the value, the better the result.)
Only clear assessments from "Very good" to "Sufficient" are included in the GPA calculation in accordance with § 72 Para. 2 Universities Act 2002. Recognized achievements are also taken into account - regardless of the examination date.
Courses that were assessed as "successfully completed" are not taken into account.
Time ranking
The academic progress is calculated using the following formula:
182.5 × ECTS completed / number of days admitted to the relevant degree program
Example calculation: 182.5 × 95 ECTS / 485 days = 35.7
→ The higher the value, the better the academic progress.
The following applies:
One semester is estimated at 182.5 days (according to the key figures of the Intellectual Capital Report).
ECTS from recognized exams whose examination date is before your admission to the respective WU degree program are not taken into account.
However, ECTS from recognized exams whose examination date is after the date of your admission will be taken into account.
Semesters in which no re-registration has taken place or in which a leave of absence has been granted are not included in the calculation.
The number of days allowed is the sum of your registered semesters (182.5 days each) up to the time of the last result taken into account in the ranking.
Note: The number of ECTS credits may be different in the grade ranking and the time ranking, as assessments such as "successfully completed" are also counted in the time ranking.
Combined ranking
The combined ranking shows your academic performance by combining grade point average and academic progress.
Both criteria are weighted equally - 50% each - and then combined.
Example:
If you have rank 37 in the grade ranking and rank 121 in the time ranking, your combined ranking is calculated as follows:
(37 + 121) ÷ 2 = 79
