“Truth Matters” – WU is committed to Scholars at Risk

25/09/2025

Academic freedom and a commitment to truth and knowledge are fundamental to any democratic society.

WU Vienna University of Economics and Business has been part of the international Scholars at Risk network for six years, thereby demonstrating its commitment to these fundamental principles. The network, which now comprises over 600 universities in more than 40 countries, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Against the backdrop of growing uncertainties in higher education in many parts of the world, member institutions are using this anniversary to advocate for academic freedom. WU is also making it clear that it is taking responsibility by offering protection, prospects, and security to colleagues under threat.

Autonomy and protection of science

Public universities in Austria have a special status. Their autonomy is enshrined in law, meaning that, despite state funding, they remain independent of political influence. Rupert Sausgruber, Rector of WU, emphasizes: “This independence is invaluable, as research and teaching must be carried out free from external pressure. This independence is a precious commodity that must be protected and actively defended. Supporting threatened scholars demonstrates this fundamental commitment and highlights WU’s dedication to upholding the principles of academic freedom on an international scale.”

Global responsibility

WU’s commitment to Scholars at Risk makes it clear that science knows no national boundaries. At a time when authoritarian regimes and political movements increasingly perceive independent research as a threat, WU is sending a clear signal: Universities have a responsibility that transcends national borders. They offer protection to individuals who are at risk of repression in their home countries, thereby facilitating the exchange of knowledge even in challenging circumstances.

Truth as an indispensable asset

“Truth Matters” means more than defending facts. It is a commitment to university values, to safeguarding the independence of research and teaching, and to taking global responsibility for threatened colleagues. WU is committed to ensuring that these principles are actively upheld not only in Austria, but worldwide.
