Current Developments in University Funding

Joint Demonstration on May 27

Update:

Joint Demonstration on May 27

Austrian universities are facing significant budgetary challenges. According to the latest outlook from the Ministry of Science, a reduction in the higher education budget from the current €16.5 billion to €15.5 billion is being discussed for the upcoming performance agreement period from 2028 to 2030. This corresponds to a potential cut of around 6 percent and would put universities under massive pressure given continuing rising costs, particularly due to inflation and general price increases.

Furthermore, this development also represents a significant shortfall relative to expected funding needs: The planned funds are noticeably below the amount that would be required to cover cost increases and maintain ongoing operations. This would have immediate repercussions on staff, infrastructure, and the teaching quality and research output.

To draw attention to these developments and send a united message about the importance of high-performing universities, a demonstration will take place in Vienna on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

Meeting point: 1:00 p.m.

Location: University of Vienna Main Building (Universitätsring/Schottentor)

The demonstration aims to raise the visibility of universities and underscore the societal importance of science, research, and teaching. Especially in a time of growing uncertainty, it is important to present a united front and highlight the conditions necessary for high-quality universities.

The Ministry of Science has informed the universities of a surprising and extremely dramatic budget outlook. There is talk of an actual cut in the total higher education budget from the current 16.5 billion euros (2025–2027 budget period) to 15.5 billion euros (-6%) for the upcoming 2028–2030 budget period.
