Shaping Digital Transformation – Through Teaching Offers

WU’s teaching offers enable students to acquire digital skills and qualify as sought-after experts at the intersection of business and technology.

Teaching Setting with a group of students and a professor.

Digital transformation is fundamentally changing the economy and society. Artificial intelligence, big data, and new technologies are rapidly permeating all industries and business sectors. To seize the opportunities and meet the challenges that come with this, in-depth knowledge of the changing conditions, business models, and technological possibilities is essential.

With its focus on digital economy in both research and teaching, WU plays a key role in generating and sharing this knowledge. The new Department of Business Analytics and Data Science, as well as the Competence Center for Applied AI and Scientific Computing, further strengthen WU’s expertise in these fields.

All study programs – from bachelor’s to master’s level – impart digital skills and competences. Students learn to understand new technologies, implement innovations, and actively shape digital change. In addition to broadly integrating digital content into all degree programs, WU also offers specialized study paths: five bachelor’s specializations, the bachelor’s major in Business Information Systems, and the English-taught Master’s Program in Digital Economy. There are also opportunities for executives to acquire these skills, such as the Executive MBA in Digital Transformation & Data Science and continuing education certificates on digitalization topics (e.g., Data Science, Blockchain, Data Governance, or Digital Transformation). These programs educate experts at the interface of business and technology.

Each year, more than 3,500 students graduate WU with solid digital skills and competences. In the past ten years, over 6,700 students have completed an IT-oriented bachelor’s specialization, and more than 950 have completed the bachelor’s major in Business Information Systems. The new Master’s Program in Digital Economy, launched in 2021, already has over 230 students enrolled and more than 85 graduates. Since 2019, over 60 executives have completed the EMBA in Digital Transformation & Data Science, and more than 120 have deepened their digital skills with a certificate from the WU Executive Academy.

“Today, managers do not know about digital technologies, as much as computer scientists know too little about business. Our new master’s trains IT-savvy thought leaders that will drive tomorrow’s business.” - Jan Mendling, Faculty member of the Master’s Program in Digital Economy

By educating qualified experts with sound digital knowledge and understanding, WU contributes to the digitalization of the Austrian and international economy. Graduates are able to initiate and shape digital innovations within companies and organizations—and are therefore especially in demand on the job market.
