Elective

To qualify as Electives, courses must meet the following criteria:

  • Related to Economics

  • Master's Level

  • Final Grade (no workshop type courses)

You can combine multiple courses to attain the required 6 ECTS.

Types of Courses:

1. Courses offered by WU's MSc Economics:

  • All Field Courses and R&P Seminars of the MSc Economics are eligible as Elective.

  • In case that the content is not too similar to a course of your curriculum, you have the option to take mandatory courses from the track you are not enrolled in.

Note: Bridging courses are not eligible as Elective.

Registration:
  • Field Courses: via LPIS or pre-registration form

  • R&P Seminars and mandatory courses: pre-registration form

  • The pre-registration form is sent out by program management via email

2. Other Master's Level Courses at WU:

  • Courses offered by other master's programs at WU:

    • To check elegibility, contact us via pre-registration form (to be sent out by program management via email).

    • Registration: We will register you if

      • Course fulfils the necessary criteria in form and content

      • Other program agrees

  • "Additional Courses" – master's level courses, that are not part of a curriculum:

    • Find courses in the course catalog (Master's Programs/Additional Courses).

    • Check eligibility by emailing masterecon@wu.ac.at.

    • Registration: LPIS

    • Recommendations:

      • Scientific Working with R and LaTeX (offered in February and September)

      • SOLV – organized by ECON students (offered each semester)

3. Courses from Other Universities (Austria and Abroad):

  • Exchange semester: For quick, preliminary information on courses that are eligible for credit transfer, please check the online database for credit transfer. Please contact course.abroad@wu.ac.at for any additional questions.

  • Other Austrian universities: For credit transfers from other universities in Austria you have to apply for a pre-recognition notice before starting the course. To do so, please contact studienrecht@wu.ac.at.

  • EU.ENGAGE: You can also search for suitable courses within the EU.ENGAGE network – online courses offered our eight European universities (Manheim, Toulouse, Tilburg,..). To check eligiblility of a course please contact course.abroad@wu.ac.at.

4. Extracurricular Service Learning at WU:

Service learning is a method of teaching and learning that combines service to the community with the acquisition of academic, methodological, and social skills. In service learning projects, students perform work that benefits the community. They learn how to draw connections between relevant theoretical content and what they learn in their practical work. To have your credits assigned to the Elective, upon course completion, contact exam.master@wu.ac.at (for courses of category 1, 2, or 4), or anerkennung@wu.ac.at (category 3).
