Preference-Based Registration

Course registration at WU typically takes place via LPIS – following a first-come-first-served principle.

As Research & Policy Seminars are particularly important for students developing their research interests, for those courses, we have introduced a registration mechanism that takes into account students’ preferences.

Based on the submitted preferences, places for the Research & Policy Seminars (as well as the corresponding Field Courses) are allocated.

Registration for additional Specialization Courses is handled through LPIS.

Stage 1 – Research & Policy Seminars and Corresponding Field Courses

During the semester breaks, students are provided with the registration form by email.

Students use this form to distribute 100 points across the seminars according to their preferences.

Based on the points allocated, available places will be assigned to the students who assigned the highest number of points to each seminar.

Registration for Research & Policy Seminars and the corresponding Field Courses is handled by program management before LPIS registration begins.

Tie-breaker criteria (in the event of equal numbers of points):

  1. A master’s thesis in a related field (topic already agreed upon with supervisor)

  2. Completion of the corresponding Field Course in a previous semester

  3. Total number of ECTS completed

  4. Grade point average

Please note: At this stage, students can only be registered for seminars required to complete the curriculum (maximum of two Research & Policy Seminars).

Stage 2 – Additional Specialization Courses and Changes

Once LPIS registration has opened, students may:

  • Register for additional courses (e.g., field courses offered without seminar)

  • De-register from courses if they have changed their plans

Stage 3 – Specialization Courses as Electives

Field Courses that shall count towards the Elective can be registered for directly via LPIS.

Additional Research & Policy Seminars can be registered for by sending an email to exam.master@wu.ac.at.
