Internal teaching allowances increased for the first time since 2009!

Teaching

For the first time since 2009, WU has increased the internal teaching allowances - by 15%. Employees who are covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (KV) and teach more than stipulated in the KV or their Employment Contract, receive a so-called teaching allowance at WU. The amount of this teaching allowance depends on the staff category and is determined unilaterally by the employer. Further details in German can be found here.

Accordingly, Teaching and Research Associates (except Teaching and Research Associates Research) receive the so-called teaching allowance 1 (LZ 1) for teaching that exceeds the teaching load resulting from the all-in KV salary. Teaching and Research Associates Research, Assistant Professors, Senior Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, Senior Scientists and project staff members receive teaching allowance 2 (LZ 2). Neither teaching allowance has been increased since 2009, i.e. since the Collective Bargaining Agreement came into force. The Academic Staff Council has been pointing out this unsatisfactory situation for some time. However, with the start of the 2024 summer semester, these teaching allowances will finally be increased by 15%.

This means that LZ 1 will increase from € 622.30 gross per credit hour per semester (resulting in € 103.72 per additional credit hour per month) to € 716 (resulting in € 119.33 per additional credit hour per month). In the case of LZ 2, instead of € 952.20 gross per credit hour per semester (resulting in € 158.70 per additional credit hour per month), € 1,095 will be paid per semester (resulting in € 182.50 per additional credit hour per month). However, it should be noted that these teaching allowances are not taken into account when calculating the bonus payments for the 13th- and 14th-month.

The Academic Staff Council welcomes this increase of teaching allowances. When evaluating this measure, it is however also necessary to compare it to the cumulative inflation rate from 2009 to 2023, which was approximately 47%. Therefore, despite the delight at the new Rector's Council's action, it must be noted that this increase does not even begin to compensate for the real wage loss that has occurred since 2009.

In addition, it should be noted that the remuneration of external lecturers who are employed at WU as freelancers has once again not been increased. For some departments, it may therefore become increasingly difficult to attract external course instructors to teach at WU.
