WU Vienna’s high-potential honors program turns 20!

For many years, WU Vienna University of Economics and Business has been offering a wide range of custom-tailored support services to ensure an optimal student experience and provide the best possible guidance and support to WU students throughout their academic journey. One of these programs, the WU Top League, is aimed at particularly committed and highly qualified first-semester students enrolled in WU bachelor’s programs. This year marks the WU Top League’s 20th anniversary. Since its inception, around 1,000 first-semester students have participated in this key WU honors program.

The WU Top League is open to high school graduates with an excellent academic track record and relevant additional experience. The focus is on providing custom-tailored support to students who demonstrate exceptional commitment and motivation. Of the nearly 4,000 students starting WU bachelor’s programs each year, only 60 are accepted to the WU Top League. They receive personalized guidance and get to participate in hands-on workshops and events held in collaboration with corporate partners. This gives Top League students an important head start in building their professional networks. After successful completion of the six-semester program, students receive a certificate during a special ceremony.

A space for personal growth

Emphasizing the important role of the program, WU Rector Rupert Sausgruber points out, “The WU Top League is specifically designed to support students above and beyond the curriculum. Through personalized support, hands-on events, and opportunities to get in touch with partner companies, students are put in a unique position that allows them to grow as a person and as a professional, build networks, and take on responsibility.”

In addition to the WU Top League, WU also offers two further honors programs for high-potential students: The Center of Excellence, established in 1989, gives master’s students the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary project groups and in close cooperation with business partners. The Jus+ Lab is aimed at outstanding business law students. Held together with leading employers in the field of law, it is designed to build bridges between academic studies and real-world practice.

Ever-evolving support programs with a strong target-group focus

WU also offers dedicated support programs for top athletes (in cooperation with KADA) and for students with disabilities (BeAble), as well as an extensive range of wellbeing services including a variety of workshops, coaching opportunities, and peer group meetings. Students who want to give back to the community can also choose between numerous opportunities at WU: As NextGenBuddies, they can mentor children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. In the WU Impact Community, they can develop sustainable projects. In the Changemaker program, they can help elementary school children learn about the fundamental mechanisms of the economy and entrepreneurship. As Welcome Tutors, they can help first-year students find their way around WU.
