With support from Caritas, WU Vienna is responding to an urgent call for help from four Ukrainian partner universities: Karazin University, Vadym Hetman Kyiv National Economic University (KNEU), Alfred Nobel University, and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. WU is now calling on its community to support this partnership.  

University students and faculty in Ukraine face existential challenges every day. Power outages bring university infrastructures to a standstill, internet connections fail, lecture halls remain unheated, and classes sometimes have to be relocated to air-raid shelters. In many places, the technical infrastructure has been severely damaged or is pushed way beyond capacity. 

Despite these extreme conditions, students and faculty members are unwavering in their commitment to academic work, and students and teaching staff are eager to continue their studies and research. 

Education needs a future – WU is stepping up to its responsibility. Let’s help together! 

At WU, we’re responding with a targeted fundraising campaign to support our Ukrainian partner universities and help them keep their academic activities going. The goal is to stabilize the local infrastructure so that the universities can keep pushing on even under difficult circumstances. 

“The challenges our partner universities in Ukraine are facing show how quickly the basic conditions needed for teaching and learning can come under pressure. Our goal is to take targeted action to support our partners and help make academic work possible despite the adverse conditions,” says WU Rector Rupert Sausgruber.  

The donations will be used directly for purposes like the following: 

• Repairing and expanding server and IT infrastructures 

• Providing equipment for teaching during power outages 

• Creating stable, safe, and warm learning environments 

With this campaign, WU is sending a clear signal of international academic solidarity. We’re implementing this initiative in cooperation with partners including ENGAGE.EU and Caritas.
