The new WU University Council is complete.

The new WU University Council is complete. At its constituent meeting on 11 April 2023, the body, which is one of the University's governing bodies and has supervisory and control functions, unanimously appointed Professor Dr. Thomas Bieger as the fifth member for the term of office from 1 March 2023 to 29 February 2028. Dr. Cattina Leitner LL.M. was elected Chairperson of the University Council.

The University Council of WU has five members. Dr. Leitner (lawyer at DORDA Attorneys at Law) and Dr. Angela Köppl (Senior Economist at the Austrian Institute of Economic Research - WIFO) are appointed by the Federal Government; Dr. Leitner already served on the University Council of WU in the term of office 2018 to 2023 and chaired the Council.

Reappointed by the WU Senate is Dr.in Christine Dornaus, Director of the Board of Wiener Städtische Versicherung AG Vienna Insurance Group; new from this side is Mag. Dietmar Griebler, Director of the Municipal and Provincial Offices of the City of Vienna.

Together, these four members now elected Professor Dr. Thomas Bieger, former and longstanding rector of the University of St. Gallen and President of AQ Austria since 2022, as the fifth member.

Tasks of the University Council

The University Council is WU's highest governing body, along with the Rectorate and the Senate. It consists of five members who are or were active in responsible positions in society and who, based on their experience and knowledge, can support the University in fulfilling its tasks and achieving its goals. The University Council is a link between the University and the knowledge society.

Members may not be members or employees of the University. Membership of more than one University Council is also excluded. The term of office is five years; reappointment is possible once.

The tasks of the University Council include the election of the Rector from a trio of candidates proposed by the Senate and the Vice-Rectors, as well as the conclusion of target agreements and employment contracts with the members of the Rectorate. It is also responsible for approving the development and organisation plan as well as the draft performance agreement, the approval of the budget estimate of the university and, if necessary, other measures or the approval of the establishment of companies and foundations.
