Economic Literacy of Pupils
Study Business Education – help shape the future
The Institute for Business Education at WU is the longest standing chair in Austria in this field and plays a pioneering role in the training of teachers for business subjects. Through the combination of economic knowledge and didactic skills, the Master's Program in Business Education optimally prepares its graduates for a teaching career in vocational schools. Through that, WU contributes to the economic and financial literacy of teenagers.
Each year, around 100 students start the Master's Program in Business Education at WU. The structure of the program is based on two main pillars: on the one hand, the curriculum includes didactics, pedagogics and educational sciences and, on the other hand, advanced economics, business, and social sciences. In order to gain practical experience, students spend around 15 weeks at vocational schools in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. WU is the only university to offer the program on a part-time basis.
Over the past 35 years, around 2,600 students have graduated from the diploma and master's programs in business education. Thanks to their sound education in business, economics, and pedagogy, the graduates are able to teach complex content in a comprehensible and competent manner. The practical orientation and the possibility of completing the master's degree part-time while working, enables future business teachers to gain practical teaching experience during their studies. Graduates are not only qualified to teach in schools, but also to take on various business professions, especially in controlling, auditing, IT, but also tax and business consulting, as well as corporate in-house training, personnel development programs and adult education.
Through the education of qualified teachers WU contributes to the economic and financial literacy of pupils and prepares them for a wide range of professions but also for further study programs. In addition to working in schools, they are successful in various areas of business, particularly in human resources development, tax consulting and auditing, management consulting, accounting and controlling, and in-house training.
After graduation, about half of the graduates of the Master's Program in Business Education work as teachers in vocational schools, vocational secondary middle and upper schools in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. Each year, they teach more than 100,000 students in business subjects and therefore contribute to a large extend to the economic literacy of teenagers. They impart business and economic knowledge relevant in the school context but also contribute to the personal development of the teenagers. Afterwards, pupils are able to understand economic and social contexts, act in an entrepreneurial and responsible manner and are prepared for starting a career or enter a study program. For many of them, the lessons by a qualified teacher spark a special interest in economic and business topics and they decide to deepen their knowledge at a university by enrolling in a related study program. About one-third of WU's bachelor's students come from a vocational upper secondary school. Thus, the training of teachers at WU makes a relevant contribution to increasing the general understanding of economics among the Austrian population.
