Credit Transfer
How does the application process work?
Dear students,
To make it easier for you to submit your recognition applications, we are currently introducing a new electronic tool.
From now on, you can submit your applications completely paperless. For exams taken at the institutions listed below, the tool is already available in OSS (Online Student Service):
Austrian universities (except WU)
Universities of Applied Sciences, private universities, etc. in Austria
WU partner universities / WU mobility programs
You can find the link in your OSS under the menu section "Anerkennung & Abschluss” and then " Antrag auf Anerkennung".
For exams taken at other institutions, you can find more information here:

How to Submit Your Application →
Step 1: Check the requirements
Before you submit your application, make sure your completed exams meet the requirements of the Recognition Regulation for Colleges of Higher Vocational Education. This regulation is based on a thorough review of curricula from relevant institutions. Subject matter experts compare the course content directly with WU courses and exams to ensure subject-specific compatibility — meaning the topics, learning outcomes, and academic level must match. The current version of the Recognition Regulation for Colleges of Higher Vocational Education is available here.
If the criteria are met, please follow these steps:
Step 2: Submit the Online Application
Only proceed with this step once all documents are complete. Applications must be submitted exclusively via our online application system.
Step 4: Upload Your Documents
Please upload all required documents, as they are necessary to process and review your recognition application.
Self-service credit transfer between the WU Bachelor Business Law and Business, Economics and Social Sciences
With Self-Service Credit Transfer (=SB-Anerkennung), you can transfer exam credits between two study programs directly using the online tool — no paperwork needed. You can access the SB-Anerkennung tool here.
Important: You can use the SB-Anerkennung tool only if you're eligible to register for exams in the program where you want your credits to be recognized. To be eligible, you must first complete all required courses — following the curriculum’s sequencing.
Examinations completed abroad at non-partner universities
Step 1: Complete the Supplementary Sheets
Ensure that all required documents are complete before submitting your application. Please use only the supplementary forms intendetd for your specific program.
Step 2: Prepare Your Documents
Certificates: If your certificates are from educational institutions that are not partner universities of WU and were issued abroad, have them authenticated according to the applicable regulations. You can find more information about authentication and translations here.
Proof of Completed Credits / ECTS Points: Submit one of the following documents clearly indicating ECTS credits: a transcript or certificate with ECTS points, an official confirmation from your educational institution (with stamp and signature), or a printout from a publicly accessible website showing the ECTS points, including a direct link to the source.
Course Description: Submit the course description in German or English – including a publicly accessible link.
Important: Submitted documents must be official. Self-created or copied content descriptions will not be accepted.
Step 3: Submit the Online Application
Only proceed with this step once all documents are complete. Submit your recognition application electronically here.
Step 4: Upload Your Documents
Upload all required documents. These are necessary for the content review of your recognition application.
Important:
Applications are only accepted on business days. If you submit your application on a weekend or public holiday, it will be officially received on the next business day. The processing period also begins on that day.
A recognition decision becomes legally binding if no appeal is filed. This means it is final, irrevocable, and enforceable. Once recognition has been granted, it cannot be withdrawn.
If you have any questions, please contact anerkennung@wu.ac.at.
WU Exchange Semester
If you completed one or more exams as part of a WU-organized exchange program — such as Erasmus+ or the WU Mobility Grant — you can find detailed information here.
To apply for credit transfer, please submit your application using the online tool.
If you have any questions, just send an email to course.abroad@wu.ac.at.
Important: Applications are processed only on business days. If you submit your application on a weekend or public holiday, it will be considered received on the next business day. The processing period also begins on that day.
Concurrent enrollment at another university
You may take examinations at another Austrian university only if one of the following conditions applies:
The examination replaces an elective course at WU, or
The examination was approved in advance because it cannot be taken at WU (e.g. due to the phase-out of a curriculum).
If you have questions or wish to submit an application, please contact anerkennung@wu.ac.at.

Online Recognition Database
What is the Online Recognition Database for students?
The Online Recognition Database is a service unique in Austria, offered exclusively by WU to support its students. It provides an overview of previously recognized courses and helps you plan your studies more effectively.
Please note: The database is intended for guidance only and does not constitute a legal entitlement to recognition.
FAQ
Which courses and how many ECTS credits can be transferred as free electives?
You may request recognition for any course completed at a recognized university, provided it was graded positively — that is, with a passing grade.
A maximum of 13 ECTS credits can be accepted as electives.
We recommend submitting your recognition request after completing a study abroad program, as ECTS credits remain valid indefinitely.
