The media law support service is aimed at WU researchers preparing to deliver high-publicity statements for the media. It gives faculty the opportunity to consult with media law experts before and after appearances in the media. It is beneficial for consultation with experts before authorizations of interviews or official statements and when faced with hate speech or personal insults resulting a public appearance or statement.

The media law support service gives faculty the opportunity to consult with media law experts before and after appearances in the media. As part of your work at WU, the media law support service is available to you in the following situations:

• In preparation for media interviews on sensitive topics, incl. do’s and don’ts with regard to the specific topic

• For consultation faced with hate speech or personal insults resulting a public appearance or statement.

• Consultation on potential illegal hate speech on social media (shitstorms, harrassment, violation of privacy rights, etc.

• To review any interviews requiring authorization, e.g. when you have been asked to approve the final print version of an interview and would like to have it reviewed by our media law experts before giving your approval for release

You can consult with our media law experts in any one of the following ways:

• By phone

• By sending print versions of an interview for authorization

• In person

If you need to avail yourself of the media law support service in a specific situation, please contact the Personnel Development Office (contact person: Florian Reisky, ext. 5831 or by email). The Personnel Development Office will approve your request, then you can contact the media law expert directly to make an appointment. In most cases, appointments are for a 30-minute time slot. If necessary, up to 60 minutes can be approved. The contact information for the lawyers is listed at the bottom of this page.

If you require assistance on very short notice (e.g. a request in the morning for an interview on the same or the next day) and if the Personnel Development Office cannot be reached in time, you can contact the lawyers directly. In this case, please inform the Personnel Development Office by email that you are using the service and which lawyer you have contacted.

The explicit approval of the Personnel Development Office is required, in writing, for any and all consultations exceeding 60 minutes.

Usually, the concerns outlined above should be able to be dealt with within the framework of a consultation of up to 30 min, in special cases in up to 60 min or more. If the specific case requires a consultation beyond the usual 30-60 min, a prior agreement with the Personnel Development Office is required for the costs to be covered.

The Personnel Development Office will cover the costs for a consultation of 30 min, in special cases up to 60 min or more (prior agreement with the PD Office required). The lawyers will then invoice the Personnel Development Office directly.
