6 Assistant Professors, tenure track, qualification agreement

Fulltime, 40 hours/week
Starting as early as possible and limited for 6 years  

A qualification agreement will be concluded at the start of the employment (§ 27 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement). Pursuant to WU’s Personnel Development Plan, this position can only be fixed-term for up to six years. Once all objectives agreed upon in the qualification agreement have been fulfilled, the employment relationship can be made permanent. Employees who have successfully completed a qualification agreement are classified as associate professors. From an organizational regulation perspective they belong to the group of professors. Three years after successful completion of the qualification agreement, they are entitled to apply for promotion to full professor according to the By-Laws of WU § 43a.  

WU's new Department of Business Analytics and Decision Sciences’ focus is on predictive and prescriptive analytics to support informed, data-driven strategic business decisions. Researchers at the department develop and apply methods that derive optimal business decisions from data in a business context and empirically validate their effectiveness. A key priority of the department is applying these methods across fields that are complementary to WU’s existing research, fostering collaboration with other departments at WU.   

The successful candidates will help build up the department’s research and teaching profile and shape its academic culture.

What you have to offer

  • We seek candidates with strong research potential in one or more methodological areas of Business Analytics and Decision Sciences, such as: 

    • Machine learning (symbolic and sub-symbolic AI, including deep learning, reinforcement learning, generative AI, or automated decision-making),

    • Simulation, optimization, and experimentation,

    • Algorithmic game theory and market design, 

    • Modern statistics or econometrics

  • Candidates should have a PhD degree or anticipate receiving a PhD in the current academic year in Business Analytics, Decision Sciences, Operations Research, Management Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field

  • Candidates who completed their PhD/doctoral degree at WU Vienna must present proof that they have completed an uninterrupted employment period at a postdoc/Assistant Professor level of at least two years (with a minimum of 20h/week employment) at another university or non-academic research institution, without simultaneous employment at WU

  • Academic research paper (“job market paper”), preferably single-authored, which has been published or is publishable in a leading academic journal 

  • Active involvement in the international academic community 

  • Proven international academic experience is preferred (i.e. a PhD from a non-Austrian university or at least one year of working experience at the postdoc level at a non-Austrian academic institution abroad) 

  • A demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching

  • High ambition and motivation for an academic career

  • Ability to work independently 

  • A demonstrated ability to be a good team player

  • Active involvement in setting up or managing academic initiatives or institutions
