The Austrian Science Fund (FWF), Austria's central funding organization for basic research, has approved a € 1.5 million grant for a further four-year extension of the interdisciplinary International Business Taxation PhD program at WU. The international peer reviewers commissioned by FWF were unanimous in their recommendation to extend the program. The objective of the program, established in 2011, is to bring the world’s most promising young researchers in the field of international taxation to Vienna.

The PhD program International Business Taxation (DIBT) is the only program of its kind worldwide in the field of law and economics. Applications are invited from around the globe, and the program is taught entirely in English. Most participants come from the fields of tax law, business taxation, and finance. “The program prepares young researchers for a successful career anywhere in the world,” says Michael Lang, WU professor and program spokesman.

Comprehensive, three-year program

The PhD program in International Business Taxation provides young researchers with solid academic qualifications with specialist expertise in tax law, business taxation, or finance. Graduates have the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to apply scientific methods to complex taxation-related issues, especially in international, cross-border contexts, and to conduct independent research.

Extended for a further four years

The international team of peer reviewers based its unanimous decision to approve the program’s four-year extension grant on the excellent reputation of the participating faculty and the outstanding quality of the scientific output generated by DIBT’s young researchers. The experts were particularly impressed that DIBT has attracted the best and most promising young scientists in the field to Vienna to attend the program. DIBT has students from all over the world, including Brazil, China, Israel, Korea, Mexico, and the USA. The FWF grant will be used both to secure the program’s capacity as well as to bring researchers from around the world to Vienna to teach in the DIBT research seminars and workshops.
