We are looking for applicants for two industry-sponsored praedoc positions at WU's

Fulltime, 40 hours/week
Starting March 01, 2022, and limited until September 30, 2026

We are offering two PhD positions. Each one will specialize in one of the two topics. Your application will automatically be considered for both positions. Please state clearly in your motivation letter if you are particularly interested in one topic, and which prior experience and skills uniquely qualifies you for researching the topic. If you are equally interested in both topics, please include this information for both topics.

You will have the opportunity to lead your own small research groups of Master Students on aspects of your chosen topic and work closely with ÖBB. At the Institute of Data, Process and Knowledge Management and the Institute for Digital Ecosystems, we provide an excellent, international and interdisciplinary research environment. This is your chance to contribute to building the next generation of Data Ecosystems!

What to expect

Conduct exciting and novel research on your PhD thesis (Dissertation) on the topic of “Data and Knowledge Structuring in the Enterprise” or on the topic of “Digital products and interfaces in business ecosystems”.

Coordinate, plan and teach lab courses for Master students within WU’s Digital Economy program, planning industry research projects with student groups, co-supervise BSc and MSc theses. Optional: support in other lectures of the program or related courses in WU’s undergraduate program.

Support administrative tasks such as support and co-organization of workshops, conferences, as well as outreach and industry events. Support university administration tasks within the institute.
 
Build up a personal network with industry partners and within academia, where creating opportunities for your own career path is explicitly encouraged.
 
Writing a dissertation: Driven by one of the above-mentioned research questions, you will be working on and developing your own specific research hypotheses with the goal to write a dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Verena Dorner or Prof. Axel Polleres.

    What you have to offer

    University Degree: you have a master degree in Business Information Systems, Business Informatics, Computer Science (or a related field of study), or Social Sciences (e.g., Business Administration, Economics; with a specialization relevant to Information Systems/Computer Science).  
    Practical & theoretical foundation: you have solid practical & theoretical foundation in one or more of the following topic areas: depending on the position you apply for, the focus lies on different subtopics, but if you bring a background in topics applicable to both, it is a plus:

    Data and Knowledge Structuring in the Enterprise
    - Data Governance and Data Cataloguing
    - Databases and Big data management
    - Data Science
    - Machine Learning and other branches of Artificial Intelligence (incl information extraction, Data mining, NLP, etc.)
    - Intelligent Data integration techniques such as Semantic Web, Knowledge Graphs, Knowledge representation & reasoning

    Digital products and interfaces in business ecosystems
    - Economics, especially with a focus on Digital Economy
    - Data science
    - Digital Ecosystems
    - Digital Products and Pricing
    - Software Development
    - User Interface Design and User Experience

    Communication Skills: you have excellent skills in English in writing and personal communication; German language skills are a plus.
     
    Advanced Skills/experience: the following skills / experience are an additional advantage:
    - Teaching experience (e.g. Tutorials, Workshops)
    - Software Development skills (e.g. Java, Python)
    - Practical experience with Databases and Data Science Tools
    - Applied statistics
    - Experience in experimental design and analysis

    The minimum monthly gross salary amounts to €2,971.50, this salary may be adjusted based on job-related prior work experience.
