The Austrian social security includes statutory insurance coverage in several areas for everyone who works and lives in Austria. In addition to this statutory social security coverage, everyone who lives and works in Austria is free to take out additional private insurance policies as needed.

Austria’s statutory social security system includes accident and health insurance, unemployment insurance, pension insurance.

WU-Employees are insured with Versicherungsanstalt öffentlich Bediensteter, Eisenbahnen und Bergbau.

If you have statutory insurance, your Austrian social insurance provider will issue a so-called e-card, which you must take with you whenever you visit a doctor or go for treatment at a healthcare facility.

Guest-Stays at WU without an employment contract (e.g. Guest Researcher, Sabbatical)

You have to make sure that you can provide sufficent accident and health insurance. Please contact WU Welcome Services or the hosting Department directly for information/assistance.

Note: Third-country nationals staying longer than 6 months need in any case proof of "health inscurance covering all risks".
