​​WU remains strong in global QS subject rankings

WU Vienna University of Economics and Business has once again achieved strong results in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject.

WU Vienna University of Economics and Business has once again achieved strong results in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject, further raising its international profile. WU has maintained stable positions in several subjects within the Social Sciences & Management discipline and in one Engineering and Technology subject, which speaks to the breadth of WU’s academic offerings. 

WU’s performance in the subject of Business & Management Studies deserves special mention. Ranked 69th worldwide, WU is the highest-ranked university in Austria and the third-ranked institution in the German-speaking area (DACH region). 

With a place in the 51–100 group, WU also achieved a strong result in Marketing and is the only Austrian university to rank in the 51–100 group. In the DACH region, it thus joins the Technical University of Munich in the top tier behind the University of St. Gallen. In Economics & Econometrics, WU is once again the best Austrian university ranked, coming in at 106th place. 

WU’s further results at a glance: 

  • Accounting & Finance: 101–150 group 

  • Statistics & Operational Research: 151–200 group 

  • Law: 301–350 group 

  • Sociology: 251-300 group 

In addition, WU is also represented in the Computer Science & Information Systems subject ranking (651–700 group), strengthening its position in the discipline of Engineering and Technology. 

Rankings boost international visibility 

For WU Rector Rupert Sausgruber, international rankings play a key role in the university’s strategic development. He says, “International rankings are important points of reference in the global higher education landscape. They show where we stand compared to other international universities, and they help us attract highly qualified students and faculty from around the world. The latest results underscore WU’s consistently good performance.” 

About the QS Rankings 

The rankings compiled by the UK-based analytics company Quacquarelli Symonds are among the best-known higher education rankings worldwide. The QS World University Rankings by Subject rank more than 15,000 degree programs taught at over 1,500 universities around the world, in five general disciplines. The rankings are based on data such as global surveys of academics and employers, citations of academic publications, and metrics on international research collaboration.  

In the overall ranking for the Social Sciences & Management discipline, WU ranks 153rd. The top spots are traditionally held by leading international universities such as Harvard University, the University of Oxford, and Stanford University. Coming in at 12th place, Bocconi University is the highest-ranked university in continental Europe.
