The creation of an IT-based solution in the care-taking sector - bitworks

01/02/2022

Wintersemester 2021-22 / bitworks

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Austrian IT firm bitworks approached the E&I institute intending to find an IT-based solution to tackle the problems in the care-taking system. As there is a growing demand for IT-based solutions, especially in this sector, as well as an extreme demographical change happening, bitworks wanted to seize this opportunity. They requested the InnoLab Team to assess the market and work on an innovative and problem-solution-oriented product.

Goal

The main goal of our project was to understand the underlying needs and problems of people in need of care and of their relatives. Furthermore, the aim was to analyze and cluster the insights and translate them into tangible key insights and ideas, which could later be designed as prototypes.

Methodology

To achieve the main goal of this project, the team employed the Design Thinking Method. This method consists of five iterative steps, which are building up on each other, and are related to each other. In the first phase, the empathize phase, 87 qualitative interviews were conducted to get a broad and thorough overview of the target group. In the define phase, it was of crucial importance to analyze and divide the data into different personas and key insights. The results from this phase were the basis for the ideate phase in which numerous ideas were generated and assessed in a feasibility/customer value matrix. The three most promising ideas have been prototyped. Additionally, they were tested in two iterations to best meet the customers’ needs and to tackle the key insights.

Results

This process resulted in three key insights, which are of great importance to the target group: Compact Information, Trust and Empathy, and Information Exchange. Consequently, three prototypes of high fidelity were designed that tackle at least one of the mentioned key insights, namely: a « Guidance App », an « Experience Journal » and « Caretaker Profiles ». Each prototype has integrated several features to best meet the feedback on the testing. What is more, the three prototypes can be integrated into one single app. Therefore, they could constitute a holistic solution.
