PORR’s road to sustainable mobility

01/02/2023

Wintersemester 2022-23 / PORR

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Goal

The goal of this project was to create a sustainable mobility concept for PORR in which we outline some measures that could be taken to make staff mobility behaviors more sustainable. In order to do this, the current situation of PORR regarding staff mobility was evaluated and existing mobility concepts and ideas for improving mobility from different sources were researched.

Methodology

The necessary data was mainly gathered by conducting interviews, both internal and external to get both a good understanding of PORR’s status quo and the personal attitudes of the employees as well as learn about best practice mobility concepts that are already used in other companies.

The interviews were supported by desk research to look beyond the findings and follow-up on some measures that were briefly mentioned by our interviewees. We also conducted a location analysis to better understand the needs and requirements of PORR’s situation.

Results

We have found that for the employees living in Vienna solutions that foster the use of public transport or the use of bicycles exist, and applying gamification could be effective measures to improve sustainable mobility.

For employees living outside of Vienna or in areas with insufficient public transport connections, the way forward usually still centers around cars, with measures such as car-sharing for work assignments, carpooling from home to work and the gradual purchase of more electric cars and setup of necessary infrastructure.

Other measures considered revolve around electric scooters to solve the last-mile problem or new technologies and apps that are being developed, offer a dashboard overview to foster understanding of employee mobility behavior.
