Institute for Cognition & Behavior
Part-time, 30 hours/week
Starting April 01, 2022, and ending after 6 years

The position is part of the newly found Institute for Cognition and Behavior headed by Prof. Susann Fiedler and Dr. Margeret Hall. The work program focuses on measuring gullibility and developing interventions to support healthy skepticism using mixed-methods including: social data science, surveys, explainable machine learning, and experiments.

What to expect

This prae-doc position, at the intersection of cyberpsychology and cybersecurity, investigates promoting healthy skepticism on the internet. Nearly four decades after its widespread introduction it is clear that even as the internet has grown more participatory, poor outcomes continue to plague susceptible users. Susceptibility continues to reverberate even though phishing, malware, and identity theft are long-standing attributes of the consumer internet. User behaviour in the form of deception blindness, insensitivity to untrustworthiness cues, and taking costly risks by using low(er) veracity sources is the clear link and focus of this research programme. You can expect:

  • Novel, forward-looking research projects at the intersection of cyberpsychology and cybersecurity looking specifically at individual-level differences in susceptibility to social engineering operations (e.g., phishing, malware, misinformation)

  • Deepening of your academic and methodological expertise with enrollment in the PhD program

  • Writing a dissertation: You will be investigating your research topic and spending a third of your working hours on writing your dissertation

  • Highly interdisciplinary research team supporting your interests across psychology, machine learning, and social data science research

  • International research network with the opportunity for research visits to network partners

  • Attendance and participation in international conferences

  • Publication of research projects in international journals

  • Teaching (within the Digital Economy or SIMC Masters programmes)

  • A small, diverse, research-intensive team in an open-minded, inclusive and family-friendly environment

What you have to offer

  • Master degree in data science, information systems, psychology, business and economics (or closely related fields, i.e., informatics) that qualifies you for enrollment in a doctoral program at WU

  • Experience with an object oriented or multi-paradigm programming language or the willingness to learn

  • Strong motivation to contribute to the interdisciplinary agenda of the institute

  • You have experience in using multimedia teaching and learning formats or are at least willing to learn

  • Fluency in English required

  • Highly motivated, curious, well organized, team player

What we offer you

  • A top business and economics university with renowned experts on the faculty and a diverse range of subjects, triple accredited

  • Excellent infrastructure, both technologically and architecturally, and a wide range of WU service units

  • Diversity and appreciation in an open-minded, inclusive and family-friendly environment

  • Flexibility and individual freedom thanks to flexible working hours

  • Inspiring campus life with over 2,400 employees in research, teaching, and administration and approximately 21,500 students on a conveniently located, architecturally unique campus in the heart of Vienna

  • Generous support for continuing education

  • Meaningful work in a pleasant working atmosphere

The minimum monthly gross salary amounts to €2,293.95, this salary may be adjusted based on job-related prior work experience.
