30/03/2026

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) has elected 46 new members.

WU researcher Victor Wegner Maus, from the Institute for Ecological Economics, has been admitted to the ÖAW’s “Young Academy.”

The Academy is divided into a Philosophical-Historical Class and a Mathematical-Scientific Class, as well as a Young Academy, whose members are no older than 40 at the time of their election. In addition, the Academy admits honorary members. The election of members takes place every two years, while that of the Young Academy occurs annually.

ÖAW sends a strong signal for diversity and renewal

63 percent of the new members are women, and for the first time, women make up the majority in the younger age groups. Alongside internationally renowned figures such as Francesca Ferlaino and Sepp Hochreiter, the Young Academy in particular demonstrates how dynamically the next generation of scientists is developing in Austria.

For WU, the admission of WU researcher Victor Wegner Maus is a significant success and a clear signal of the strength of its research in the field of digital and sustainable transformation: “I look forward to fostering interdisciplinary collaborations within the Academy, linking innovative spatial data science and AI with global sustainability challenges,” said Victor Wegner Maus.
