20/08/2025

Welcome to new WU Professor Thomas Grisold!

WU Vienna University of Economics and Business is thrilled to welcome Thomas Grisold to its ranks as a new professor at the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management. Professor Grisold carries out research on topics such as the interaction between artificial intelligence and social norms.

Thomas Grisold previously worked as an assistant professor at the University of St. Gallen and the University of Liechtenstein. He received his PhD in economic and social sciences from WU Vienna in 2018. He has conducted research at institutions such as the University of Notre Dame (USA), Queensland University of Technology (Australia), Lancaster University (England), the Weizenbaum Institute (Germany), the University of Palermo (Italy), and the University of Zagreb (Croatia). Professor Grisold has received numerous awards for his work, most recently the Research Prize of the Principality of Liechtenstein.

The social and organizational impacts of artificial intelligence

In his research, Thomas Grisold looks at how applications of artificial intelligence affect society and organizations. Currently, he is working on human-AI ecologies, i.e. social collectives in which humans and various forms of artificial intelligence interact and learn from each other. In particular, Grisold focuses on the question of how we can steer and control artificial intelligence through social norms. Drawing on his interdisciplinary background in cognitive science, Grisold combines current approaches from neuroscience with socio-technical theory.

Research areas

Professor Grisold’s key research areas also include investigations into how digital technologies are changing business processes, often in surprising and unplanned ways. For example, he looks at how new Internet of Things technologies can lead to unintended effects such as closer monitoring of employees and the disruption of processes. In his empirical studies, Thomas Grisold uses computer-based research designs that allow him to analyze digital traces from IT systems to derive theoretical explanations.
