A sunny outlook: Photovoltaics for Campus WU

22/08/2025

Since July, workers have been busy installing large-scale photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the buildings on Campus WU.

The project includes almost all buildings on campus, with the exception of the D2/SC building, as the technical conditions there do not allow for efficient operation of the modules.

The installations are scheduled for completion by September 2025, and they mark a significant step in the implementation of WU’s sustainability strategy. WU’s Environmental Management team has been working to implement photovoltaics for some time, and now the project is finally becoming a reality.

Around 1,000 solar modules will be installed in total, with a planned annual output of around 941 kilowatt peak (kWp) – equivalent to the average annual electricity consumption of more than 200 households. All of the electricity generated will be used to power Campus WU, covering around 7% of WU’s total electricity consumption going forward.

The systems are scheduled to go online in the fourth quarter of 2025.

With the large-scale use of photovoltaics, WU is sending a strong signal, doubling down on its commitment to sustainability and taking another step toward a climate-friendly future.
