• You are a regular, degree-seeking student at WU and fulfill the application requirements for the respective ISP.

• The award of the grant is subject to plausible proof of special and verifiable needs. A special need can arise, for example, from social or financial disadvantage, disability, chronic illness, care obligations for children and/or other persons.

• Please note that special circumstances—such as a social disadvantage, disability, chronic illness, or care obligations—must directly impact your financial situation in order for your application to be considered.

You can submit an application for a WU mobility grant as part of the International Short Program application process. Please upload the following documents in the online application form (under "additional documents") during the application period:

• Proof of special need:

  • Students must clearly demonstrate why they would not be able to afford the ISP without the grant.

  • Please ensure that you upload all required documents that clearly demonstrate your financial need. Incomplete applications cannot be considered.

  • All documents must be submitted in either German or English; otherwise, your application will be deemed incomplete.

  • Depending on individual circumstances, evidence of special need may be provided through the following documentation:

    • Current official confirmation of receipt of a federal scholarship (e.g., Studienbeihilfe)

    • Proof of income if the student is employed

    • Documentation of additional necessary costs during the exchange because of a disability or a chronic condition

    • Evidence of caregiving responsibilities for children or other relatives

  • For further information about supporting documents needed for the application, please refer to the application form.

  • The ISP team may request additional documentation if necessary

The selection of students to be awarded financial support is part of the general selection process for the International Short Programs (based on application documents and group interviews).

First, students are ranked and selected for admission to the respective program on the basis of the general selection criteria for International Short Programs (academic score and extracurricular score). If you are selected to attend an ISP abroad, your eligibility for a grant will be determined based on your financial situation, responses in the application form for WU mobility grant, and your position in the ranking.

If you are not awarded a grant, you can attend the ISP under the standard terms.

The available mobility grants are composed of two parts:

• Waived program fee

• Travel allowance (and allowance for accommodation)

This means that the exact grant amount depends on the program fee and the distance to the respective location of the ISP.

Grants available for summer 2026

• Students have no legal entitlement to a WU mobility grant.

• Students selected for a grant will be required to submit an experience report (“Erfahrungsbericht”) after the end of the program.

• Students who do not complete their International Short Program successfully or who fail to submit the report will have to pay back their grant.

• WU’s goal is to allow as many students as possible to gain international experience. For this reason, we will only award mobility grants to students who have not yet received mobility grants for ISPs abroad and WU mobility grant special support for exchange semester. By implication, by accepting the mobility grant for the ISP, you will no longer be eligible for the WU mobility grant special support for exchange semesters. Please note that this regulation pertains only to WU mobility grant special support for exchange semesters, not to all grants for semester abroad.

• If no WU grant is awarded and a student can therefore not participate in the respective program, the participation can be cancelled with good cause.
