Faculty Mobility

Strengthening the international mobility of WU researchers is of crucial importance, both for the individual researchers’ academic careers and WU’s international position. A variety of opportunities are available for researchers to gain international experience, from attending international conferences to completing an entire stage of their academic career abroad (e.g. doctorate or venia docendi).

  • Participation in international academic conferences for researchers with or without a doctoral degree:  WU travel allowances (travel and lodging expenses, conference fees, trip cancellation insurance)

  • Participation in international academic conferences/short-term stays at academic institutions abroad for researchers with or without a doctoral degree:  ÖFG international communication grants (travel and lodging expenses, conference fees)

  • Short-term stays abroad (1 week - 3 months) for Pre/Post Docs:  WU International Research Fellow (travel and lodging expenses)

  • Mobility grants for doctoral/PhD candidates serve as a travel allowance to support the mobility of WU doctoral candidates (travel costs, lodging expenses, conference fees)

  • Medium-length stays abroad (max. 6 months) for post-doctoral researchers: post-doc research contracts (funding for hiring substitute personnel at the academic unit, travel and lodging expenses)

  • Medium-length stays abroad (2-6 months) for post-doctoral researchers in /from specific focus countries (incoming and outgoing): JESH (travel and lodging expenses)

  • Long-term stays abroad (max. 12 months) for WU senior researchers: research contracts (funding for hiring substitute personnel at the academic unit, travel and lodging expenses)

  • Long-term stays abroad (10 to 36 months) for post-doctoral researchers:  FWF Erwin Schrödinger Fellowships (basic grant, travel expenses, etc.)

  • Long-term stays abroad (3 to 12 months) for post-doctoral researchers:  OeNB WU Internationalization Grant (intended to help cover expenses which are not covered by the basic funding obtained for a stay abroad and are not included in any other scholarship or grant, e.g. travel, lodging, and household expenses)

  • Short-term stays in the USA (3-4 months) for post-doctoral researchers: Fulbright grants for teaching and research (basic grant, travel expenses, health and accident insurance)

  • Financial support for completing part of an Austrian doctoral/PhD program abroad (6-12 months, research work to optimize the doctoral thesis): Marietta Blau Stipendium (Zuschussstipendium, keine Reisekosten)

  • Erasmus+ grants for teaching assignments at partner universities with a duration of 2 days to 2 months. The minimum required teaching load is 8 hours or, for longer stays, 8 hours per week. For more information, please see the web pages of the  International Office.

  • The EU’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions provide project-specific mobility grants for researchers at various career stages. For more information on these grants, please see our page on  EU-programs (in German).
