Ukrainians welcome: WU provides program information in Ukrainian

04/05/2022

As an open-minded, cosmopolitan university, WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) supports an intensive exchange of ideas with Ukrainian citizens. WU has launched various initiatives targeted at researchers and students, e.g. as part of the MORE program. Prospective students can participate in a guided campus tour in Ukrainian on May 6, and on May 11, there will be an information event on WU’s bachelor’s programs and admission procedures, also held in Ukrainian.

Refugee researchers can continue their work at WU with the JESH fellowships provided by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). Four fellowships for research stays at WU have already been granted. Additionally, WU will also offer internships for Ukrainian refugees who have started or completed an academic program in a subject represented at WU in their home country. In 2015, WU carried out a similar internship initiative for refugees from Syria and Afghanistan, which proved to be very successful.

Helping Ukrainian refugees to continue their studies in Austria

WU has been involved in the MORE initiative launched by uniko (Universities Austria) since the fall of 2015. This initiative offers refugees prospects for their future, supports them in their educational journey, and gives them free access to education and the academic community. Currently, all 30 MORE program places available at WU are filled. In addition, the WU Business Language Center offers German courses for Ukrainian refugees. Due to high demand, these places are also already taken. “It is imperative to get people out of the war zones and give them the opportunity to continue their education or their research in Austria. WU was quick to put together appropriate services for assistance immediately after the outbreak of the war. We’ve seen very strong demand, and so the available places were gone very quickly. The need is simply enormous, and we are constantly working to create additional opportunities. But of course, we depend on outside support to be able to do that,” says WU Rector Edeltraud Hanappi-Egger.

Information events on WU programs in Ukrainian

In the coming days, WU will hold events in Ukrainian for people who are interested in studying at WU and would like to take a guided tour of the campus or learn more about studying at WU. During the tour, interested Ukrainians will have the opportunity to find out more about WU’s modern campus and explore its library and auditoriums. An online information session will be held in Ukrainian to provide information on WU’s bachelor’s programs and the required admission procedures. The general registration period for starting a WU program in the coming winter or summer semester runs until May 19.
