Impact Map shows the effects of academic teaching

11/11/2021

It is becoming increasingly important for universities to reflect on and document their impacts on the economy and society. With a new publication, WU wants to make the diverse impacts of university teaching on the economy and society visible. More than 20 case studies highlight WU’s role as a responsible university. The brochure also includes facts and figures: For example, almost 25% of the 500 most influential people in the Austrian business community have a degree from WU, and WU students and graduates have founded more than 250 start-ups.

WU has set itself the goal of making the impact of its research, teaching, and third mission activities on society and the economy visible. A publication on research output was published already in 2019. The new “Teaching Impact Map” now looks at the impacts of university teaching. The report is based on 20 different case studies, seven of which are interviews with WU alumni whose diverse and impressive careers and biographies are exemplary, identifiable illustrations of the impact their alma mater has had on their lives.

What impacts are visible far beyond Campus WU?

As a responsible university, WU wants to act responsibly in everything it does and to have a positive effect on the economy and society. The aim of the new publication was to present the actual impacts of teaching in an easily understandable format. WU Rector Edeltraud Hanappi-Egger says, “While research results speak for themselves and their relevance is also represented in the media, the multifaceted effects of teaching and learning are often neglected. Public discourse is usually limited to general conditions such as classroom equipment and student-teacher ratios. In teaching, however, while the transfer of knowledge and skills plays a major role, the education and personal development of students on their way towards becoming responsible individuals is equally important. The new brochure on the impacts of teaching illustrates this clearly.”
