Presentation of final results of ÖNB-funded project “Layers of Natural Resource Extraction”

The project “Layers of Natural Resource Extraction”, funded by the Austrian National Bank (ÖNB), examined how mining and other extractive activities shape economic, environmental, and social outcomes across space and over time. It combined rigorous empirical analysis, methodological development, and open research infrastructure to make these effects more visible. The project produced four peer-reviewed publications, open software and web outputs, and new mapping products on mining areas in the tropics. These outputs provide evidence on downstream effects of mining on agriculture, forest loss and land-use change induced by expanding mining activities, and the large-scale mapping of mining areas across tropical countries, while also creating a foundation for follow-on research. The presentation will feature the main results of this project across the different work streams.
