European Universities

European Universities are transnational alliances of higher education institutions from across the EU supported through the EU’s Erasmus+ and Horizon 2020 programme.

These alliances are intended to

  • become the universities of the future,

  • promoting European values and identity,

  • revolutionizing the quality and competitiveness of European higher education.

The European Universities have the ambitious goal to enhance the quality, inclusion, digitalization and attractiveness of European higher education for the benefit of students, teachers and society.

The first 17 alliances of higher education institutions were selected in 2019, and another group of additional 24 European Universities in 2020, among these also the ENGAGE.EUalliance.

The European University Engaged in Societal Change

ENGAGE.EU is an alliance of leading European universities in business, economics, and social sciences with rich experience in analyzing societal change. The alliance's ambition is to enable its learners to act as socially engaged European citizens and to have impact on society at large.

The starting points are the big challenges reflected in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in­cluding digitalization and artificial intelligence, climate change, ageing societies and migration. Building on solid background in social sciences, Engage.EU strives for a comprehensive approach, following three intercon­nected paths:

  • Engaged Learning

  • Engaged Research and Innovation

  • Engaged in Society

ENGAGE.EU has as an aim to change the way we educate, investi­gate, innovate and reach out while becoming an incubator for driving societal change based on aca­demic excellence and work with society.

ENGAGE.EU Campus

An innovative learning environment that enables social engagement with a common philosophy, defined competencies and new pedagogies. On this basis, the partners will develop a mix of physical, blended and virtual, challenge-related ENGAGE.EU programmes. Ranging from jointly offered Summer Schools, Signature Courses, and Joint Study Programmes.

ENGAGE.EU Think Tank

The Think Tank establishes formats of advanced studies to underpin the activities of the alliance in education, research and innovation and societal outreach by bringing research communities together to address societal challenges in order to strengthen evidence-based decision making within the alliance and beyond.

Our Labs are innovative models of collaboration and co-creation on societal change challenges, consisting of mixed groups of learners, academics and practitioners.
