Highlights and News
Basic research with exploitation: BRIDGE 2024/1 (FFG) (deadline: 13 March 2024)
BRIDGE provides funding for collaboration between scientific institutes and businesses. The programme is open to all research topics. The projects should be designed as basic research projects but should also offer prospects for commercialisation. The participating companies must be effectively involved in the project work and make a financial contribution, if applicable. In BRIDGE, it is possible to integrate young researchers into projects.
Preparation: ERC Advanced Grant (deadline: 29 August 2024)
ERC Advanced Grants support established top researchers who want long-term funding to pursue a ground-breaking, ambitious project. The call is open to all topics and disciplines. Applications are assessed reviewed on the basis of scientific excellence. FFG is offering an ERC Online Training on February 20th.
ESPRIT (FWF) (no deadlines)
The ESPRIT program (Early-Stage Program: Research - Innovation - Training) is intended to improve the skills and support the professional development of researchers from all disciplines early in their research careers by giving them the opportunity to lead an independent research project. More information
Current calls on the topic of digitalization
The Digital Transformation in Mobility 2023 call (in German, deadline: 15.04.2024), which is financed by the Climate Fund, aims to prepare measures of the Digital Transformation in Mobility Action Plan (AP-DTM) so that they can subsequently be implemented in Austria. The projects run for a maximum of 18 months.
In the FFG call for proposals Digital Technologies for People and Society 2023: Climate Change and Health - Awareness and Adaptation (in German, deadline: 28 February 2024), cooperative R&D projects can be submitted in the Industrial Research and Experimental Development funding categories. Consortia consisting of at least two partners are eligible to apply, at least one Austrian company must be involved in the project.
As part of Horizon Europe Pillar II, there is Cluster 4 "Digitalization, Industry and Space" with a total budget for all 6 destinations (2023&24) of approx. 2.8 billion euros. In Destination 4: Digital & emerging technologies for competitiveness and fit for the green deal (in German, deadline: 19 March 2024), applications from the fields of AI, data and robotics as well as photonic technologies can be submitted.
The DIGITAL Europe program aims to facilitate the introduction and application of technologies, carry out pilot projects under real conditions and promote the application of research results. It complements other EU programs such as Horizon Europe and supports activities after research has been completed. The fifth call from the main work program 2023-24 is currently open. The focus of this call is on Data Spaces and Digital Skills (deadline: 21 March 2024)
Current calls in the field of climate, energy and mobility (Horizon Europe)
One of the EU's goals is to be climate-neutral by 2050. Measures in the "Climate, Energy and Mobility" cluster will make a significant contribution to this. Research and innovation projects in Cluster 5 (in German) should bring significant added value for the population. Attention: Different submission deadlines for the respective topic-specific calls!

Topic wealth/distribution (Deadline: 08 May 2024)
With its new call for international cooperation projects, the VW Foundation is promoting scientific research into the phenomenon of wealth.
Horizon Europe
MSCA Staff Exchanges (in German, Deadline: 28 February 2024) promotes the exchange of personnel between organizations in different countries, scientific disciplines and/or economic sectors (e.g. between universities and companies) and thus supports the successful transfer of knowledge between different stakeholders within and outside Europe.

National Funding
Anniversary Fund of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) (Deadline: 20 March 2024)
Total funding for project proposals submitted to the OeNB Anniversary Fund is limited to EUR 250,000. The minimum funding amount is EUR 50,000. More information
Principal Investigator Projects International (FWF) (Hungary deadline: 11 March 2024, Belgium deadline: 02 April 2024, Switzerland deadline: 02 April 2024)
Researchers may work together with project partners in selected partner countries to carry out thematically clearly defined research projects limited to a specific duration, and to devote themselves to investigating individual research questions. More information
APART-GSK (ÖAW) (Deadline: 25 March 2024)
APART-GSK is a funding programme for excellent junior scholars in the humanities and the social and cultural sciences (GSK) in the first post-doc phase of their careers. The programme seeks to offer them opportunities on the path to scholarly independence to acquire open-topic funding by themselves and with their own research ideas. More information
Top Citizen Science (FWF) (Deadline: 08 April 2024)
This funding program is aimed at all researchers leading an FWF-funded project. The objective is to address citizens of different ages, genders, and social backgrounds as well as people with highly specialized knowledge and expertise (knowledge communities). Young target groups are expressly welcome. More information
Science communication (FWF) (Deadline: 06 May 2024)
The program is aimed at researchers in Austria who are leading or have led an FWF-funded project or who are working or have worked on an FWF-funded project. More information
International Communication (ÖFG) (next deadlines: 24 March 2024, 09 June 2024)
This research funding scheme provides funding for trips abroad and will give guest researchers the opportunity to come to Austria. The funding is aimed at junior researchers demonstrating academic excellence, who have been unable to receive sufficient funding from other institutions either on formal grounds or due to a shortage of resources. Bonus to cover caretaking costs during business travel
WU has launched an initiative to provide additional support to our researchers with caretaking responsibilities. Researchers should not have to limit their international network building activities, which are such a key factor for academic success, because of caretaking responsibilities. Caretaking responsibilities include not only childcare, but also the care of spouses or partners in need of constant care or the care of elderly parents or grandparents. More Information
Awards, Grants and Scholarships
Prizes and funding awards of the City of Vienna for the humanities, social and cultural sciences, medical sciences, mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology as well as popular education (Deadline: 15.02.2024)
The prizes recognize the outstanding overall work of researchers and popular educators in the above-mentioned fields. The four prizes are endowed with EUR 10,000 each. The sponsorship prizes are awarded in recognition of outstanding overall work to date in the aforementioned fields. The total of six sponsorship awards are endowed with EUR 4,000 each. South Tyrolean provincial administration prize (Deadline: 28 February 2024)
The South Tyrolean provincial administration awards a prize for scientific work relating to the situation of women in society or equal opportunities between women and men. More Information (only in German)
Prize Austrian Statistical Society (Deadline: 10 March 2024)
The ÖSG (Austrian Statistical Society) awards annual prizes for master's degrees, diploma theses and dissertations in the field of statistics. More Information (only in German)
OCG Incentive Award und Heinz Zemanek Award (Deadline: 14 March 2024)
The Austrian Computer Society (OCG) awards the OCG Incentive Award annually to promote informatics and business informatics. The OCG also awards the Heinz Zemanek Award for the promotion of informatics and related areas. The prize is awarded every other year for excellent dissertations in these fields. More Information

With Advance, the Kaiserschild Foundation supports research projects by young academics from the fields of economics and social sciences with up to EUR 10,000.
