Best Book in International Political Economy: WU Researcher Honored

29/11/2021

The International Political Economy Society (IPES) has honored Jonas Bunte, professor of international political economy at WU Vienna, for his book “Raise the Debt: How Developing Countries Choose Their Creditors.”

In “Raise the Debt,” Bunte looks at loans for developing countries. The book systematically shows how governments choose between creditors’ competing loan offers – and that creditors are not the only ones who determine which loans developing countries receive. The author focuses on societal interest groups in recipient countries and the distributional consequences of external loans. The book offers insights into why countries accept or reject loan offers from China, for example.
