On November 1, WU appointed Hans Valentin Schroll, a former presiding judge of one of the panels of the Austrian Supreme Court, as full professor of criminal law and the law of criminal procedure. Professor Schroll will be applying his outstanding expertise to research and teaching at WU. The professorship at WU’s Department of Public Law and Tax Law has a fixed term, running until September 2023.

Hans Valentin Schroll studied law at the University of Linz, where he earned his doctoral degree in 1978. During and after his studies, he worked as an assistant professor at the University of Linz and completed his traineeship at court. In 1981, he completed the examination required for becoming a judge, and in 1982, he was appointed judge at the Linz district court. From 1983 to 1993, Schroll worked as a public prosecutor in Linz, and from 1991 to 1993, he also served as a public prosecutor with the Federal Ministry of Justice in Vienna. In 1993, Hans Valentin Schroll was appointed judge at the Linz higher regional court. From 1995 to 2002, he served as Advocate General at the Procurator General’s Office of the Austrian Supreme Court. In 2003, he was appointed as a Supreme Court judge by the Austrian president. He became a presiding judge of one of the Supreme Court’s panels in 2011, and he retired as a judge when he reached retirement age in 2019. Hans Valentin Schroll has also worked as a university lecturer since 2001, first at the University of Vienna and then, since 2015, also at WU Vienna, where he has taught courses in the WU Master’s Program in Business Law. As of November 1, he now serves as full professor of criminal law and the law of criminal procedure at WU’s Department of Public Law and Tax Law.

Close ties to WU

During his career, Hans Valentin Schroll has published extensively on topics related to criminal law, the law of criminal procedure, and criminology. He has very close ties to WU, not only because of his teaching activities, but also because he was one of the experts who evaluated WU’s Bachelor’s Program in Business Law. “For three years now, I have been able to arrange four-week student internships at the Supreme Court for the best-performing students who complete my course at WU, as part of a cooperation agreement with the Supreme Court. The students’ response to these internships has been very positive, and we’re planning to continue this initiative,” says Hans Valentin Schroll.
