Account Management

You will receive a username and an account password upon starting your studies or entering into office at WU. These login data enable you to make use of various online services at WU.

Audiovisual Media Technology

Our AV-Support team helps you with starting up and using the media technology in teaching and event rooms. Moreover, we offer support both before and during an event regarding the planning and use of audiovisual media technology.

Backup

WU employees can easily recover backed up data on the fileshares (“W-drive”) and on the WU Intranet (SharePoint).

Course & Exam Management

Via LPIS (Course and Examination Information System), students can register for and deregister from courses and examinations, as well as view their grades and registrations.

Data Center

Information on contact persons and on the usage of the Data Center at WU.

Data Storage

In conjunction with an account, WU employees are provided with personal data storage. Moreover, space on fileshares can be requested e.g. for projects. Data can also be stored on the Intranet (i.e. SharePoint) or temporarily shared with third parties via WU ownCloud.

Digital Signage

The campus information system serves as an orientation as well as a promotional tool of current or future events at the WU.

Email & Calendar

Students and employees get their own WU email addresses - groupware functions or just webmail clients can be used depending on the assigned email system. Please mind our recommendations for IT-security and system settings for safe use.

Emergency Information Systems

Important and / or interesting information can be directly sent to you via SMS or email. In order to use this service, please register your cell phone number in the Controlpanel or your email address with the mailing list of your choice.

Employee Cell Phones

Employee cell phones are purchased by IT-SERVICES according to the WU employee cell phone policy and are then managed by us. Under certain circumstances, a private usage of the employee cell phone is possible.

Fax-Services

For sending and receiving fax messages at WU, you can either use the Canon multifunctional printers or your personal email account. The TOPCALL fax-server takes care of the delivery for both options. There are separate fax addresses available for each WU employee as well as for administrative offices.

Hosting

For applications that cannot be implemented with the WU Content Management System (TYPO3), we provide a platform on which you can run third-party software (PHP, MySQL-projects) yourself.

Interactive Campus Map

“Campus” offers support in the search for spatial information, such as the location of lecture halls, offices of employees, front offices of the organizations or POIs. Moreover, it is possible to display routes between two search results.

Intranet

SharePoint is WU’s central collaboration platform and is accessible for all WU employees. On so-called “sites” you can provide information and documents for others. By means of user groups, you determine who is allowed to access certain information.

IPTV

WU operates an IPTV system which can be used by students in the language ressource center and by employees on the screens in lounges of institutes, departments and divisions.

IT-SERVICES provides recommendations for the responsible handling of IT resources. Please consider our IT policies and recommendations when working at WU.

IT Support Center

The IT Support Center serves as a central point of contact for WU employees and students with IT-related questions. Support requests and hotline inquiries are first processed here and personal support is provided. During opening hours, you can get assistance in person with questions about your WU account and related IT services at WU.

IT Training Courses

In cooperation with external trainers, special IT trainings are offered to WU employees. Dates can be found one month in advance on the Intranet pages of IT-SERVICES.

Laptop Computers and Notebooks

WU provides laptop computers for employees on leave or outgoing researchers. In addition, laptop computers can be provided for in-house trainings or workshops at WU.

Loaner Equipment

WU students and employees can borrow various devices and equipment for courses or events at WU campus free of charge.

Mailing Lists

By using “Mailman”, WU employees can manage the participants on a mailing list as well as incoming and outgoing mails. New mailing lists can be requested via IT-Support.

Network Cabling

IT-SERVICES is in charge of WU’s physical network. This network consists of the entire computer cabling system, including network sockets, switches, routers as well as Wi-Fi access points. PCs, laptop computers and network printers are connected to the WUnet.

On-Site Support

In order to improve communication, IT-SERVICES provides flying teams who offer direct support in all buildings on Campus WU.

PC Labs

IT-SERVICES operates five PC training and practice labs at two locations which can be used for courses, internal trainings and individual work by all WU account holders during opening hours. PC labs in the LC building are usually open 24/7.

Photography Services

IT-SERVICES supports you during media-oriented events at WU (e.g. “Open Day”, conferences) for marketing purposes (publication on the web, in social media channels or print media) with a photo production team.

Printing & Scanning

In each building at WU campus, there are defined printer rooms which are equipped with multifunctional devices for printing, scanning and copying.

Public Terminals

WU provides public terminals for doing administrative activities and looking up information. An overview of the locations is offered by the interactive campus map.

Room Booking

IT-SERVICES develops software applications for the central administration of the WU. The Security and Event Management and the VR for Academic Programs and Student Affairs are responsible for room booking.

SAP

IT-SERVICES develops software applications for the central administration of the WU. In the area of SAP, data connections to other systems are developed and maintained. Additional extensions require a software request and the approval of the VR staff.

Service Desk

The service desk allows WU employees to submit IT questions and questions about WU's telephone system or Learn@WU via the web. All messages posted in response to your inquiries can be viewed online in the system.

Sharing Files

Shared data storage is convenient for easy collaboration. We provide media for different purposes.

Software for Private Devices

WU students and employees can use the latest software versions of e.g. Microsoft Office, Wolfram Mathematica and EndNote Web on their private computer for study- or work-related purposes.

Software for Workstations

Computers (workstation PCs, and laptop computers) provided by IT-SERVICES are already equipped with standard programs and applications. Additional software can be installed by users themselves via the Software Center. Applications not available in the Software Center can be requested via IT support. IT-SERVICES is responsible for software acquisition, installation and license management.

Software-based Phone Calls

Skype-for-Business allows you to make phone calls and video conferencing at your workplace PC (with microphone and speakers/headsets). Moreover, it provides additional functions such as live-chat and information on telephone directory and availability of WU employees.

SSL Certificates

WU employees can request internationally approved SSL certificates for servers using a "self-enrollment" form. Applications are first reviewed, the certificates are then signed and issued. Applicants will be notified by email when the process is complete.

Streaming

Streaming allows you to broadcast events to any location at WU (e.g. lecture halls in the Teaching Center) or to the Internet.

Student Management

IT-SERVICES develops software applications for the central administration of the WU. In the area of Student Management, online-tools for the VR for Academic Programs and Student Affairs are developed. The Vice-Rector decides on the range of functions.

Surveys

IT-SERVICES supports WU employees and graduate students in conducting online surveys.

Tablet Computers

WU employees can get a tablet PC in addition to their workplace computer. IT-SERVICES procures and manages the devices. To achieve the goals of the WU Information Security Policy, tablet computers are only available with Mobile Device Management.

WU students and employees can order laptop computers and accessories for private purchases during a certain sales period (usually at the beginning of a semester)

Video Conferences

Video conferences allow you to communicate with colleagues residing in separate locations, to work on projects with different groups and to share documents or to have face-to-face connections with external people during events at WU (and vice versa)

Video Production (WUtv)

IT-SERVICES offers support in the production of high-quality videos at live-events or in the WUtv-Studio.

Voicemail

A voice mailbox for workplace telephones is automatically set up after entering a new employee in the WU telephone directory. WU employee cell phones are equipped with voice mailboxes provided by their mobile network operators.

VPN Connections

By using a VPN connection, you receive an IP-address within the network address space of the WU. This allows you to access restricted services (e.g. library catalogs or databases) which otherwise can be used on-campus only.

Web-CMS (Typo3)

IT-SERVICES is responsible for the management and further development of the Content Management System (TYPO3) which is used for WU´s webpages.

Wi-Fi Connections

You can use Wi-Fi on the entire WU campus. With “eduroam”, this is also possible for students not studying at WU. WU employees and students need a separate Wi-Fi password.

Workplace Computer

A workstation computer (desktop or laptop computer and a monitor) equipped with standard software is provided for each WU employee.

Workplace Relocation

IT-SERVICES helps you to relocate your workplace. You can support us by providing the most important information in a support request and by preparing your workplace in a way that we can easily reach the PC components when relocating.

Workplace Telephones

Every workplace at WU is equipped with a VoIP telephone set which offers you a lot of functions - e.g. conference calls, call pickups, call forwarding, hunt groups or manager/assistant groups.

WU Directory

The WU directory is a publicly accessible directory where you can find the names of all people employed at WU as well as their telephone numbers, email addresses, and divisions they belong to. For academic staff, their research areas (based on the research information and documentation system FIDES) can also be displayed.
