The position is in collaboration between the Data Management Group in WU's Institute for Information Business and the Vienna Complexity Science Hub (CSH) ( in the area of Complexity Science and the Semantic Web. The Complexity Science Hub Vienna is an international research institute in the area of complexity and big data science. The objective of CSH is to host, educate, and inspire scientists who are dedicated to collect, handle, aggregate, and make sense of big data in ways that are directly valuable for science and society. In particular, the Web and structured data on and collected from the Web are one of the most widely studied complex systems nowadays, influencing others like smart cities (for instance through Open Data, but also through social media, and more recently through participatory citizen science). While Complexity Science studies complex systems as such, Semantic Web and Web Science focus on bringing structure to non-​structured data and developing methods for scalable methods for integrating, processing and understanding Web data. Combining these strands, WU's Institute for Information Business aims at answering socio-​economic questions by integrating and exploiting the rich lode of Web Data data at scale. 

Your responsibilities

The offered position is within a cutting-​edge research project and training with leading experts in the fields of
- Web and Complexity science
- Semantic Web/Linked (Open) Data
- Computational Social Science
- Analysis and Integration of (Big) Data
- Economics and complex systems

The position is for an initial period of two years with the opportunity and the expectation to define proposals for joint follow-​up projects for a longer-​term position, which we expect to help establish a sustainable connection between WU and the CSH. The successful candidate will help to complement the interdisciplinary team at CSH. He/she will support us to build largescale infrastructures to collect, integrate and analyse data, and study the Web and social media as a complex system, and its impact in society at large.

Candidates with a strong background in at least two of the topical areas above, and particularly in bridging these areas are invited to apply. Together with the team at CSH, the successful candidate will work on developing novel methods and infrastructures to collect and process Open Web Data, combine it with closed data and conduct large-​scale experiments towards answering questions of socio-​economic relevance. We expect the successful candidate to contribute proactively to WU's teaching programs at BSc and MSc level in the areas of Data Science and Digital Economy. 

Your profile 

We search for an excellent, creative and highly motivated scientist with a PhD in computer science, economics, (theoretical or computational) physics, mathematics, complex systems, Web science, social sciences or related disciplines with strong technical skills and a strong research record.

The candidates must:
- have a great interest in multidisciplinary research,
- have a critical, open-​minded and collaborative spirit and
- be proficient in English both written and spoken.

We are looking for candidates with expertise and a strong publication record in at least one of the following topics (several is a plus):
- Building and Processing Knowledge Graphs (such as methods for the efficient interchange, extraction and structuring of Data)
- Experience in network-​based simulation and modelling using real world data
- Combining quantitative and statistical methods of large datasets
- Knowledge Representation and Reasoning for Web Data (with a particular focus on nonstandard, scalable and robust methods applied to real world data)
- Analysing the Dynamics and Evolution of Web Data (particularly methods and infrastructures for archiving and analysing such data at scale)
- Scalable Methods for managing Information complexity of the Web (particularly Big Data Infrastructures to process data at Web scale)
- Connecting virtual and physical communities by data and semantics on the Web (particularly social and technical implications)
- Combining Open and Closed Data (particularly mastering implications and technical challenges on privacy and security)

The gross monthly salary is € 3,803.90 (paid 14 times per year).

This employee position will be limited until September 23, 2021, starting on January 01, 2020 (commencement date subject to change).
